Fire Season is Here So Be Prepared for Any Unknown Disaster

Are You Prepared for a Natural Disaster in Your Area

Fire Season is Here So Be Prepared for the Unknown

Are you prepared for a national disaster in your area? Every year millions of people in the US are affected by natural disasters such as Firestorms, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Hurricanes, and Flooding. Would you be prepared if this happened to you?

Here are some safety tips to help you prepare for such a disaster.

  • Keep you gas tank half to full; never go to sleep on a empty tank. You might not be able to buy gas for days.
  • Have water on hand for you and your family and don't forget the pets. Have spare dog food available for your pets.
  • Keep food on hand that doesn't need to to be cooked. 1 week supply is hopefully sufficient.
  • Make sure you have a "First-Aid" kit with disinfectant, bandages, tape and antibiotic cream plus aspirin and prescription meds for anyone living with you. Drug stores may not have your records available and hospitals may be too busy unless you go there and wait hours to see a doctor.
  • Have a radio with batteries available to be able to get news since your cell phones will only last so long and cannot be recharged without electricity. Keep a cell phone car charger available.
  • Keep warm coats and blankets on hand as you might be outside in the cold weather.
  • If you have to evacuate, it is good to know alternative routes. Find out where the local shelters are in neighboring cites.
  • Round up your pets immediately as they will be scared and might run off. You do not want to have to search for your pets so better to keep them pinned up if possible.
  •  Discuss emergency plans with your family. Talk with your children so they will be prepared and make an alternative plan if they are at school plus this would be extremely scary and stressful for kids. Most have cell phones now so communication is much better.
  • Babies and Seniors have special needs and equipment; prescription meds, toys, diapers and bottles, car seats, strollers, wheel chairs, walkers.
  • Mementos and important papers that would be hard or impossible to replace.
  • Computers and cameras are important to load into cars.

Fire Danger is Here so Be Ready for Disasters

We just had a fire near our community which could of headed our way fast with a wind shift. I started walking through the house thinking what I should pile up near the car. I used to have a list but since moving, I had probably thrown it away. I kept this list in the kitchen drawer so I could grab it and not have to think. I need to make one of those lists up today and put it back in my kitchen drawer. I highly recommend every make a list so when you are stressed and in a hurry, you do not have to think.

Quick Sheet Reminder List:

  1. Children, Kids, Pets
  2. Photo albums
  3. Framed pictures
  4. Important papers- Wills, Insurance Papers, Pink Slips, Tax Returns, Birth/Death Certificates.
  5. Mementos- Flags from funerals, Bibles, Jewelry Box, etc.

Remember: Get your children and kids in the car first and then the other items afterwards. Plus it is good to move your car out of the garage and driveway and put on the street.  Be ready to evacuate if needed. Keep your car key in your pocket and not in the car.

Hi David,

Thanks for the kinds words. In my last career, I had to take care of other people's emergencies but when it is your own, you have to stop and regroup quickly so a cheat sheet is the perfect reminder for those times. Of course, we are all hoping we never have to do this and will not have any natural disasters to deal with.

Good Post Kristin. We are so dry here and I fear what the hot dry summer will bring. We have already had too many fires.

Hi William,

It is hard to know what the summer has in store. Scary thing is that most fires are set and not due to error, lightning strikes or cars anymore. Hopefully our Fire Dept's will keep them   from spreading. We have the huge fire fighting plane nearby at Norton Airport (former base) and we have several smaller fire planes too. The good thing is that they cannot leave the area to fight fires in other places like Northern CA or Nevada but stay on alert for fires strictly in SoCal.
