San Ramon is one of California’s outstanding urban villages. It is home to Bishop Ranch one of the premiere business addresses in the country and home to the likes of Chevron, Honda, Toyota, New York Life, and 897 more – employing 11,000 people.

San Ramon was once home to the Seunen Indians. In 1797 it was Mission San Jose and late one of the big California ranch sites – Jose Maria Amador’s 16,000 acre Rancho San Ramon. The areas name comes from an Indian vaquero, Ramon, who tended mission sheep in the area. The first American settlers (Leo & Mary Jane Norris) arrived on the scene in 1850.

The Norris’ purchased 4,450 acres of land from Amador. (The Harper Team has not sold anything quite that large – yet).

San Ramon had a few name changes over the years, but with the establishment of the first permanent post office in 1873, San Ramon became firmly established as a community entitiy.

California divorce had a major impact on the area when Thomas Bishop acquired 3000 acres from the Norrises during their breakup.

In 1970 the population of “San Ramon Village” was 4084. The San Ramon Valley population at the time was 25,899. San Ramon incorporated in 1983.
