Learning to Blog

Services for Real Estate Pros with Home Tips for Women

I started on Sunday and I've learned more about blogging this week than the year plus on TypePad, because all of you are actively using Active Rain. THANKS

Being a very busy writer:

My challenge when writing for publications is to keep the word count within the budget allowed. This is very difficult for someone like me, who likes to talk. I inevitably write a "short" article of 550-600 words, and then spend almost as much time cutting words without sacrificing content, to get under the 350 (Applaud) or 400 (Mirror) limits.

I was therefore quite surprised to see NO POINTS for a blog post that's under 200 words. The word count doesn't really equate to value, so maybe someday in the future, the value will be based on use of keywords for the AR community, or a combination thereof.

It's probably not worth checking word counts but I'm absolutely fascinated by the "points" which say 1 of the 2 posts this morning had more value. If anything, the one with ZERO points is more valuable in the message it conveyed.

PS I'm still a newbie at this so let me know what I'm missing here.

Tina welcome to Active Rain. My advice is don't get bogged down with all the talk about points. Write quality material worth reading...thats whats important :)

You get more points for more comments. Focus on good posts and the comments will flow. However, you will be surprised at times at what "works".  Unfortunately, drama and controversy "sells".  Happy blogging!

I think Bill is right.  We tend to look at the points (just wait till you hear about featured post!) but don't worry about any of it.  Enjoy writing, meeting people and learning what you enjoy with blogging.

Welcome to Active Rain!  We are so glad you are here and your shorter post may end up with more  comments thereby giving you more points.  That's way worring about the points doesn't help.

Join the newbie group and other groups you like and you are on your way.  Have fun!!

When we start on AR the points seems to mean a lot but after awhile you will forget about them.

I would also not focus on points, but results.  My opinion is that you get out of something what you put in.  If you write short posts that are meaningful, people will respond and in the end, that is all that matters.

Tina:  The word restriction for posts is no credit for posts of less than fifty (50) words.  If your post is over fifty words, you receive 200 points.  That may be where the confusion came from.
