I know many agents will think I'm crazy for my title but hear me out.  There is a method to my madness.

There was a client who came into town to interview for a position here in Ann Arbor and he was pretty excited about the opportunity.  Great company and seems to be a nice town...but he is coming from Arizona and California prior to that.  The weather certainly showed him and thing or eight about our area.  It snowed 8" while he was visiting and this was this past week the second week of March!   http://treetowntalk.com

But he needed a "feel for the area".  This is a gentleman who doesn't know anything about Michigan and needs to know if it's a place he would consider living.

I have been in Ann Arbor for 23 years now and know and love it; but have lived in lots of parts of the country.  I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and first moved to Tampa, FL straight out of college, transferred to Toledo, Ohio (my least favorite location to live) then San Francisco bay area and Paris, France before settling in Michigan.  This means I understand how being new feels.  Relocating can be tough.  It can be exciting but you need to know where you are moving to get really thrilled about it.

I had the opportunity to spend a couple hours showing off our fair city and even looked at a couple homes with this gentleman.  We both knew we would see vacant homes and not trouble any homeowners, since he hasn't even been offered a job and yet nor been qualified for a loan.  But this is what I'm willing to do to "show off our area".

I know how "new to the area" feels and relocation package and smooth transition helps any move.  We have much to offer and this person ended up excited about the opportunity to move.  Let's hope he gets the offer!

If you are an Ann Arbor employer looking to expand I am happy to show your new hires the area and talk about Ann Arbor with whatever their interests might be.  I understand relocation and would be happy to help introduce your new hires to this great area.

Karen, I don't disagree with you on the need to make the potential client feel comfortable, and get them acquainted with the area.  It is a good thing.  Who knows, they may end up being a huge source of referrals as well as clients!

Good for you, Karen!  I have no problem either doing the "feel for the town" tours.  It is a great opportunity to showcase not only your town and YOURSELF!

Tony & Darcy: Now you have a great attitude!  I actually didn't think of it that way but you are so right.  Thanks for commenting.

Thank you Karen for the post.  Being someone who made a lot of moves in the past I know the importance of getting the feel of the area and who better than a REALTOR(r).  Aren't we suppose to know our product and the area that we serve?  Thank you for being that person.

Karen, as always you have that positive attitude.  Who knows when that guy moves, others from that company might come too.  Of course he will say call Karen cause she's the best.

Karen, I spent a lovely weekend last year touring the area (and homes) with a family from North Carolina.  They did not relocate here, but we still keep in touch and I thoroughly enjoyed our time together.

Be the ambassador.  People will remember you for it, and the relationships you build are priceless.

I think you have the right attitude. I feel the same as you I think. I feel that I need to promote our city and show people what it has to offer. I like what Kris says. Be the ambassador.

Karen, When we were moving to Michigan 10 years ago, we had never stepped foot in the state even once before.  We had two agents, one was showing us property close to Dearborn and another was showing property in the Ann Arbor area.  The first agent couldn't understand why I wanted to see the downtowns of the areas we were visiting.  The second agent gave us running commentary on the area, her family, and asked us a lot of questions about us - it was exactly what I needed.  We bought from her because of exactly what you described doing with your potential client.

Karen, I agree with you completely and my fingers are crossed he'll get the offer as well. BTW, where in Cincinnati did you grow up? I lived there for quite a while and my husband's whole family is back there.
