Save Our Monarchs - Plant Milkweed!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marshall Enterprises

Not too long ago, I wrote about the dangers of decreasing habitat and the perils of using pesticides on plants and lawns and what that means to the monarch butterfly.

Here is a great opportunity to help them out!

Save Our Monarchs, a new non-profit that was recently formed is suggesting that you plant milkweed in your yards….whether in a border or your garden.

The milkweed is a plant that used to be considered a weed, but it is now getting attention as not only something to help monarchs, but people,  too.

You can read about Save Our Monarchs here.

And, here is a great article about how milkweed is beneficial to humans.

Happy Gardening,

Best, Ron

I remember when the crisis really hit hard last year.  And, then reading, why we didn't see very many of these lovely creature.  I planted about forty seeds on the hill bed this year where they liike to hang out, and then put some water out for them, too!

The wife actually followed your instructions in your earlier post and planted a butterfly garden, Ron!  It should be lovely in about a month!

I'll have to check this out to see if a) we have Monarch butterflies in our area and b) if Milkweed grows well here.  If a & b check out, I'm going for it!!  Thanks!!

Ron, That's one of my early memories.  I lived in western Maryland in 1st grade and for our class we had a monarch caterpillar and had to collect milkweed to feed it.  We got to watch it go through the stages until it was a butterfly and then let it fly away.  Very cool!  Bill

I use to collect the caterpillars on the milkweed plant and watch them go through the lifecycle. It was so neat. I loved doing that as a kid. Often times we had monarch butterflies flying around the house.

I think milkweed is making a comeback in my area. I'm starting to see it, when years ago I didn't see it at all.

Ron, this is great information and we have noticed a steep drop in the butterfly population around our home.  I will look for milkweed on my next visit to our local nursery.

I hope you can find the plants, Sharon.  You might need to ask for asclepia!  And, best of luck to you and your monarchs!

I have not seen a milkweed plant for a while, later this summer I will look for some and collect some seeds to plant.

Thanks Ron!
