Holiday Roh-oh-oh-oooh oh oh oh oh oh ohd!!!

We all remember this little ditty from the movie National Lampoon's  Family Vacation with the Griswold Family starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo!!! Just thinking about grandma dead and strapped to the top of car makes me laugh out loud!

Taking your family on vacation requires preplanning.

Are you planning to take a family vacation this summer? It's never too soon to start planning and take precautions to keep your family and your home safe.

Here are a few tips before you leave the house:

  •     Tell your neighbors you’ll be out of town and to be aware of any unusual activity.
  •     Notify your alarm company .
  •     Discontinue your postal delivery.
  •     Use timers on interior lights to make it appear you’re home as usual.
  •     Don’t make it easy for burglars by leaving messages on voice mail or posting on social networks.
  •     Post on social networks about your vacation after you’ve returned.
  •     Remove the hidden spare keys and give one to a trusted neighbor or friend.
  •     Lock everything, double-check and set the alarm.
  •     Take pictures of your belongings in case you need them.
  •     Disconnect TVs and other equipment in case of unexpected power surges.
  •     Adjust your thermostat.
  •     Arrange for lawn care.
  •     Consider disconnecting the garage door opener.
  •     Put irreplaceable valuables in a safety deposit box.

Now those are tips that are just common sense. But have you thought about your family's safety while you are gone?

  • Don't post your vacation plans on your social networks.
  • Do not "check in" or use "geo-tags" to say where you are. These top two tips are sure ways to get the wrong people interested in your absence from home!
  • Pack medications in the original bottles and carry on plane.
  • Call your health insurance company before hand to find out what you need to know-should you or a family member need a trip to the emergency room.
  • When you go out sight-seeing, write your phone number on your young child's arm with a sharpie in case you are separated.
  • If you are headed to the amusement park or a large, crowded area, take a family photo just before you walk out the door so you have current descriptions and pictures.
  • Disinfect everything with a wet wipe. Not paranoid, just careful.
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash with you.
  • Put your passports in the hotel room safe along with any other valuables. It can't hurt to take a photo of all you have in the safe either.

Relax and enjoy your vacation. You know you have taken all the right precautions.

It’s nice to go out of town on a well-deserved trip and it’s always nice to get back home…especially when it is just the way you left it.

Be safe but have some fun out there. We Americans seem to think that there will always be time for a trip tomorrow or the next day. You are not supposed to live to work. You are supposed to work so you may LIVE!!!

We are taking our two boys, 19 and 20, on a family vacation this summer. It just might be the very last time that we are able to do this as a family. There are no girlfriends to worry about, no school, jobs have already been notified and each boy has their own spending money!!!! What can be better!
