I Must Be Doing Something Right

I often wonder about the time and effort that is put into being found by customers needing contractor services in the Sacramento area. Like many others, the regular posting and updating and learning new ideas can take a big chunk of the day - for some it is every day. Is it all worth the effort?

I do regularly get calls from people who have found me while searching for a dry rot contractor, or deck building, or siding replacement. Apparently my name comes up in many different areas of the searches, and that’s a good thing. It didn’t start right away but it has gradually gotten greater with time.

I have noticed that it does come and go like the tides. Multiple calls one day and none the next sort of thing is the pattern. I don’t know why that is exactly but many there is a reason. But lately the tide has gotten stronger, more calls on a regular basis with heavy calls on days like today. So I must be doing something right.

I don’t use any other form of advertising, so my friends and fellow contractors can’t quite figure out why I’m so busy while they are struggling to find new work. I’ve tried to explain what it is that I’m doing and why I do it, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. They will have a long lists of excuses, many of which I used to believe myself.

I used the some excuses: I don’t have the time, I don’t know what to blog about, no one cares what I have to say, and nobody else is doing this. I have to just chuckle and say, “Give it a try”. It is working for me, I think it can work for you too.

We hear it here often, but I think those starting out believe it will be different for them Michael. We can only reach out in an effort to show them what can be done.

I guess you reap what you sow Suzanne. Maybe others are just comfortable where they are; that's okay too!  :)

Tom, You have build up a trust and referral business, people are so gun shy when it comes to having work done on their properties. You apparently a man of your word and integrity and your previous customers are happy to refer you. I don't know if you have employees. They can help you do the volume but can create more head aches. You type of business sounds like strictly service but with your skills you cod contract for bigger jobs and sub the work out to multiply you business. Great job, and keep up the good work.

Tom, this is a great point! Today you can't be found, if you don't have an internet presence. Blogging will do that. Good for you!

Tom - I can't count how many times I've recommended blogging to other agents and even lenders, but so far none of them have done it. Like you, I don't receive calls everyday, but I know my time is paying off.

Laura - Doing the right things, has many benefits.

Praful - I don't know about "everything", luckily there is plenty of room for errors.  :)

Rod - Getting the calls to come is the beginning, how we handle them is the next challenge.

Michael - You are right, if you want to be found, you have to be available out there.

Michelle - Maybe blogging isn't for everyone, but many of us here didn't think it was for us either. Sometimes we just need to get outside of that comfort zone a bit.

Tom, after a three year sabatical I too am working on getting my phone to ring a little more often, and slowly I am making some fine tuning and getting to where I want to be.... not bad for less than six months.     Looking into another marketing strtegy that should load up the data base a bit quicker.

With the Electrical business  I had more work I could do with the crew I had just from contractor referrals and the yellow pages.   I never thought about the yellow pages for realestate, I think that would be a waste with internet marketing.

Good to hear things are falling into place and your phone rings everyday, that is a great feeling, I remember when I started my first retail service business working out of the car and using what they called a record a call, like a message taking machine the doctors used years ago, in fact still have the machine at my hanger.   It was remote to retrieve my messages before I left my main job, little by little there would be more and more messages and more work where I finally went full time.    I didn't use the yellow pages until I got into my first building, then I really ramped up the marketing.... it was a challenge and fun at the same time and being young didn't know different working seven days a week twelve to fourteen hours a day.   Can't do that now.
