Celebrate Flag Day and Remember the History of
"The Star Spangled Banner"
Happy Flag Day
Today is the day to fly your flag to commemorate Flag Day and to remember the meaning of the words of our national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner" written by Francis Scott Key.
On August 24, 1814, The British military had burned the United States Capitol and White House. Americans feared the British would succeed and force the US to become a part of England again.
Francis Scott Key's friend, Doctor William Beanes, had been captured by the British and Key decided to try to get him released. After gaining permission from President James Madison, he set out on a boat with John Skinner, the Prisoner of War negotiator. They found the fleet and boarded the ship to negotiate the release. The British made them stay aboard while they battled Baltimore. Key waited for 2 days and watched while the British hammered Fort McHenry for 24 hours. And when the bombing stopped and Key looked across the bay, the small flag that had proudly hung over the fort was gone. He got out his spyglass and was looking over the damage when all of a sudden a huge American flag was raised and he could hear them playing 'Yankie Doodle".
He had started writing the words the night before "while the bombs bursting in air" and later "oh say can you see that star spangled banner yet waive"
Little did Key know that his song would be passed down from generation to generation and later become the National Anthem.
Our flag was first created by Betsy Ross displaying 13 colonies and has gone many changes since. On June 14, 1777, was the first Flag Day. The Continental Congress had created America's first symbol depicting the union of the 13 colonies that were now states. Congress wrote: "The Flag of the 13 United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white."
*I love this piece of history and can imagine how he felt watching the battle from the ship. It gives me goose-bumps.
Happy Flag Day
