Am I Just Wrong On This?

When I was president of the Board of Realtors® we decided to do a community project, and the suggestion was to give school supplies to the school children in the area. We solicited donations and paid for supplies not donated, using a suggested list provided by the school for each child. We then paid several hundred dollars to provide individual "pencil bags" with holes so they could be clipped in a binder, and we had our logo imprinted so folks might appreciate the gesture. We also had volunteers spend several hours sorting supplies and filling each bag.

After the second year, I found out that the teachers would take the supplies out of the bags, dump everything in one huge box, and throw the bags in the trash. They never bothered to ask if it was alright with us to throw away our donation. Worse than that, I found out that if I bought supplies for my own child with my money, those supplies would be dumped in the same box. The box is used to provide children who need them most. I assume if a box of crayons were all broken in one day by the same child, he would merrily go get a new box the next morning, not learning to take care of his possessions, and not knowing or caring who had to pay for them.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with teaching fundamental Marxism to grade school students! I have not donated one "red" cent to that project since. Call me a curmudgeon if you like.

I have been down this road before and it stings. I will volunteer to help the school in many ways with my time, but the wallet stays in my pocket from now on.

Ron, it's a shame that people can't appreciate things like they should. How insulting to you. It's great to donate for those in need, but draw the line somewhere. Keep being the good person you are, and smile knowing that you went out of your way for good cause unlike others.

Ron - Sort of sounds like how the politicians are running the country doesn't it?

I was thinking the "M" word before I got to the part of your post where you mentioned it. Seems quite a few people in this country think that's a dandy way to go.  I can certainly see why you would be offended - especially after all the time and money you so generously donated.  Lack of appreciation seems to run rampant these days and it's disturbing.

Ron for this very reason I quit sending extras with my kids.  I only send what they use on a daily basis.  Our office however just did a backpack drive for kids that are less fortunate that would not have gotten the necessary supplies if we hadn't stepped up.  I think finding a local church or organization that puts together these backpack drives and gives them directly to kids that need them is better then sending extras to schools when your kids won't even get to use the items.
