TBT, Back When Horses were my Transportation.

I found this old picture on my little brother's facebook page and thought it would be a good candidate for throw back Thursday.

When I was young we had a rather large farm and when I was not doing farm work my passions involved outdoor activities like hunting and trapping which were made much easier with the aid of faster transportation than my feet.

So when I was in junior high I invested my savings in a my first horse, the sorrel on the right, "Rowdy".  My parents also bought the bay on the left "Tina", who was Rowdy's mother.

Rowdy was an Arabian/Welsh cross with lots of spirit and a tendency to panic over just about everything which led to plenty of injuries for both of us as he took us on plenty of dances through forests, fences and rockpiles.

Later I added to my collection of horses with a palomino quarter horse named Mindy who was much less panicky and stronger.

Though Mindy was a much larger horse and more capable, I never appreciated her as much as I did Rowdy and his spirited willingness to take on new adventures.

Rowdy and Mindy are beautiful, and I'll bet you and your brother had great times exploring areas in the county where a vehicle could never reach.

Ah, the halcyon days of past.  There is something so sentimental about pictures taken in the 1970s.  The yellow tones that cast an aged hue on photos of that era.

Bob, love the photo!  As one of the kids who grew up really wanting a horse, I can say you were really lucky to have one - or more than one!

Thanks, Bob, for sharing the memories of your first horses.

My father owned a farm and had horses but I never learned to ride. We never lived on a farm.

I loved to ride when I was younger... In fact in high school I was a stable bum.. Which meant I got to take folks out on the trails and not only odd I get paid for doing so but I could ride for hours...  Loved your photo...

Nice that we have ATV's to get around now, less hay and much easier to transport.
