Don’t Forget to Take Your Furry Friend to Work With You Today!
Yesterday my lovely bride and I were continuing the celebration of our 30th anniversary with a gift card for Applebee's that my brother in law Gary gave us at the big anniversary party last weekend. We discovered a little calendar of June events at our table .
The first one to catch our eyes was todays big event, “take your dog to work day” June 20th.
Of course this caught our eye since we always have a few dogs running around the office.
When Sally is teaching school, she is not able to take a pup along. Could you imagine the chaos that a dog would create in an elementary school?
Josh and Amy can’t take their dogs to work either. Amy works at a home for delinquent children and they have enough distractions without dogs creating a few more. Josh manages a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and bar and I can’t imagine how a dog would fit in with the health codes.
It did raise a question though, do the employees of Applebee’s get to bring their dogs to work, after all they posted the event on their calendar.
Jack and Drake live charmed lives where they get to spend most work days with their humans.
On office days Jack spends much of his time laying under one of my desks or following me around when I get up to get something. Drake will spend his days laying on the couch, ready to jump up and guard the office should someone walk by on the sidewalk or drive into the driveway.
Of course when people do stop by the office measures must be taken to keep the dogs from licking and getting too friendly with our guests. I clip jacks leash onto his collar and to a desk drawer to prevent him from going to the front of my desk or into the meeting room, and Drake is either put into a room with a door on it or put outside in the kennel.
On woods days or real estate days the dogs are very aware of the signs of preparation.
Drake will sneak out the door while Nick is packing his truck, jump into the little seat behind the passenger seat and refuse to leave the truck until Nick gets to the woods.
Jack will start pacing and whining at the first sign that I may be leaving, and will generally try to push me back behind my desk. That is until I pull out the red retractable leash, his sign that he gets to go, then he will proceed to jump off the ceiling while trying to get the hook attached to his collar.
Though Drake does get to ride along with Nick to the woods, he seldom gets to run free until the end of the workday as this is too distracting to Nick while trying to be productive at his job. But Drake is fine with being tethered to the truck in the shade waiting until he can go out and sniff out tasty bugs, snakes, and rodents later on.
Jack seems to like to do whatever I am doing whether it is showing houses or coaching the foresters in the woods or meeting with and charming the clients. When showing houses Jack always remains tethered to my belt or tied up in the yard. When in the woods I let him run free knowing that he will not let me out of his sight for a minute. He does however always wear his “I am not a wolf, don’t shoot” orange vest along with a few bright ribbon flags streaming from his collar.
So for most of our pampered pooches, take your dog to work day will be about the same as any other day.
However for our little Min Pin, Sherlock, since Sally only teaches from Monday through Thursday during the summer, maybe he will be able to help her with some painting that she is doing for me in the afternoon.
What are you doing to celebrate “take your dog to work day”?
