It is my wife, Stephanie’s, birthday today! As my friends and family know, I enjoy writing and have done a great deal of it the last few years.
Of all the things I have written, I think what I wrote to my wife on our 40th anniversary was my best work. I guess that is only fitting; since she is, without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to me. Without her I am nothing.
So in honor of her birthday, I would like to share my best work about the best thing in my life.
Steph,
We are approaching 40 years of being together. Looking back on our life, and all the things we have shared…and had to endure, there is no one that I would rather have shared those times with.
We were so young when we got married. I know now that I really had no idea what it really meant to love someone. More importantly, I didn’t know what it meant to really be loved.
Having you love me all these years has been a blessing from God; and just like many of God’s blessings, more than I deserved. Your love has been constant. I could count on it like I could count on the sun coming up every morning. Just like I expect the sun to be there every day, I have taken for granted that you would be there as well. What I want you to know is that it didn’t mean that I valued your love any less.
Hopefully; as I’ve become older, I’ve grown wiser. I know that I couldn’t exist without the sun, and I know I wouldn’t want to exist without you. Your warmth has comforted me. Your light has brightened my world. As the sun rises each day, waking up next to each morning has made each day worth living.
I know we have a disagreement over what is “our song”…but I’m staying with Marvin Gaye’s, “If This World Were Mine”. Parts of the lyrics go like this…
If this world were mine, I'd
place at your feet
All that I own; you've been so good to me
If this world were mine
I'd give you the flowers,
the birds and the bees
I wish I could have done all those things for you, because you certainly deserved them.
I’m not sure about many of the choices I have made in my life, but asking you to marry me was certainly my best decision .
For with your love inside me,
that would be all I need
Love, Tom
