Aside from annoying, mosquitoes may transmit diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus.

Union County has its own Bureau of Mosquito Control which is responsible for controlling the mosquito population of Union County. When spraying is scheduled, locations will be posted on the Union County home page.  If spraying is scheduled for your neighborhood, the Bureau of Mosquito Control recommends that you:

  • Stay indoors during spraying.
  • Close your windows and air conditioning vents.
  • Wash outdoor toys before using them again.
  • Bring laundry indoors before spraying or wash it again.
  • Wash vegetables from your garden thoroughly.

But you can also help control mosquitoes in Union County by following these tips:

  • Eliminate standing water from your property. Mosquitoes breed in water, and won't lay their eggs if there isn't standing water. Therefore, don't leave any empty containers or cans on your property. Water that accumulates in your garbage cans and recyclables could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes so be sure to poke holes in the bottoms of cans!
  • Clean clogged roof gutters so no water can accumulate.
  • Empty and refill bird baths and kiddie pools every few days.
  • If you have a water garden, add fish which will eat the mosquito larvae.

You can help prevent mosquito bites by following these tips:

  • Wear light colored and long sleeved clothes.
  • Limit your time outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use a mosquito repellent.
  • Repair your window screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Great information at a very appropriate time.  Here, in Martin County, FL, we still spray, nut not as much as in the years past.  There's been a lot of time and money spent on eliminating the areas where mosquitoes breed and our mosquito population has plummeted dramatically.

This is good advice for area residents. Everyone should use repellent when taking walks or working in the yard.

We get sprayed by the city here in Destin. With all the rain we have had this year the Mosquitos have been voracious.

Wayne & Jean - It not uncommon out here in the West to find swimming pools a lovely shade of green with fish swimming around feasting on mosquito larva.  Those very small fish provide a necessary "service" and are readily available for mosquito control.  Would hate to think about how it would be without those fish.  Thanks for the blog.
