Persistence And Reward

and down it slides again!Persistence And Reward

This morning was another typical morning.  Wake up, head to the computer shortly after and catch up on the news, email and the Rain.  After a bit I looked out the window to where our bird feeder and hummingbird feeder hang, and notice that something that doesn't look like a bird is in the feeder.  SQUIRREL!!

It has its back to me, so I quietly open the door to the deck and go outside.  Still no movement.  Now quietly across the flagstone patio, just a few feet away and no movement.  That bushy tail is RIGHT THERE, so reach out and touch it and WHOOSH that squirrel is off the feeder and across 10 yards and up the nearest tree!

I go back inside and get back to work, and a few minutes later this young squirrel is back at it.  The feeder itself is too high to reach with a jump from the ground, so the squirrel has to try to scale the center pole.  It hops up, grabs, skitters up a few feet and holds on....and then slides back down the pole to the ground.  It tries again, a little higher, stops, slides back down again!  This goes on for several more attempts and FINALLY the squirrel reaches the top crossbar and hangs on!

From there it jumps to the top of the feeder, but the feeder spins and the squirrel slides off like the kid on the merry-go-round that is spinning faster than they can hold on.  Back down to the grass!  Squirrel eventually decides that maybe all those seeds on the ground are just fine after all, at least for now!  But I'm not going to be surprised if I look out later and see that squirrel back on the feeder ledge, a just reward for being so persistent!  (But first it's got to get past the PAM I sprayed on the pole!).

It sounds like that squirrel has plenty of perseverance! She'll be back when the tummy growls.

Paul, We moved the feeders recently from the side of the home to the yard, prior to that the tree rats didn't have a chance of getting near them.

Joanna, The birds chuck a LOT of seeds to the ground looking for just that ONE they want, so the squirrel could do pretty well just ground feeding.

Teral, I've been watching this afternoon and no return (yet!).

I was thinking through your post I was going to tell you to olive oil it, then I got to the Pam spray.  Poor squirrels.

Tammy, There's about 30 acres of woods in our immediate area, so I suspect they can find plenty of food outside or our bird feeder :)

Kathy, I love watching them too and this squirrel climbing up and sliding down over and over was pretty amusing!  (and that was BEFORE spraying the pole).

BLiz: He/she will probably keep on trying until all of the bird feed is gone. They are quite persistent where food is concerned.

BLiz, I am always entertained by what the squirrels do to get to the bird seed on my patio. They jump at it causing it to swing which knocks seed to the ground. They get plenty of seed that way ... and so do the birds. They share the space ... no fighting for seed except among the birds. It's always a show for me.

I like to watch all the critters outdoors and how they navigate things.  It is very interesting.

Good evening BLiz. Squirrels are very resourceful creatures. I had to put squirrel guards on my poles to keep the squirrels out of the the feeders.

Anita, They certainly can be.  No signs of it trying again, but I spent much of the afternoon out with a buyer.

Debbie, It was!

Kathleen, I noticed the same thing this morning, the squirrel and a cardinal getting the loose seed in the grass with no concern with the other.

Chris Ann, And living in the woods we get plenty of critters to watch!

Michael, They definitely are stubborn at getting what they want!

Our bird feeder is about 30 feet from our house, in clear sight from our sliding window. My little Jack Russell, Roxie, goes bonkers when the squirrels get close. It's like an alarm of sorts--the squirrels usually run off when she starts pounding on the glass and barking like crazy!

Tom, I think our Chihuahuas want to take out the squirrels.  Of course they also think they can take out a deer.  Perhaps a Napolean complex?

Those little stinkers certainly are persistent and agile aren't they.

Sure hope the Pam on that pole is slippery enough to keep him out of your feeder.

Good Luck with him. Funny site to watch, I am sure.

Liz & Bill, I love the post and the picture. Great idea to spray the pole with Pam. But there is a lesson we can learn-don't be easily discouraged when there is something worthy to be gained.

Make it a great week.

John, No doubt, plenty of parallels to real estate and life in general watching that squirrel try over and over.

Hi BLiz - if the Pam doesn't work, you can hook up a 6-V battery.  Those squirrels are pesky and resourceful little critters.
