You are on a lifelong trip. Are you simply going along for the ride?
Or are you following your charted course where success will be your destination? You will achieve that success only through goal achievement.
If you ever took a dream vacation you probably spent some time planning it. You probably figured out exactly where you wanted to go and what things you wanted to do and what you wanted to see. You had to arrange reservations, schedule tours, and prepare a list of all of the appropriate things you would need to pack. This planning was probably very detailed, somewhat tedious, and time consuming. But, because you wanted your vacation to turn out the way you expected you planned down to the last detail.
When you think about your life, your daily journey, how well do you plan and organize it? Your life’s journey is the MOST important trip you will ever take. Why is it that we spend so little time planning our lives? Many of us have little or no idea where we are going!
If you think that setting goals does not matter stop for a minute and consider why we should set goals. For example:
- If you don’t set goals, someone else might set them for you and you won’t like the outcome.
- All things must be mentally accomplished before they can be physically accomplished. What you think about you become.
- It is easier, cheaper, and faster than trial and error … Would you build a house without a set of blueprints?
- It keeps you on target. You could build a house without following plans but you will possibly make a mistake in framing or foundation the will affect the structure of the entire house.
There a personal rewards and benefits to setting goals and achieving them. Some include:
- Goals help you discover your own personal uniqueness.
- Goals help you overcome negative conditioning.
- Goals help you to take action.
- Goals add to the excitement of life.
- Goals help you to make better decisions.
- Goals help you live your life the way YOU want.
- Goals help bring out “the best” in you.
- Goals develop self-confidence.
Your goals should be written down. Writing down your goals forces you to clarify your thoughts. If you cannot express your goal clearly and succinctly in writing, you will probably need to revisit the goal to make sure that you are focusing on what you really want to accomplish. Reviewing your written goals serves as a constant and visual reminder of your objectives, which helps you to stay focused and motivated in the midst of competing demands, interruptions, and setbacks. Written goals have permanence that promote accurate, sustained action.
