“Foodie Fridays” in Austin
I love restaurants that are locally owned and like to support their venues. In Austin we are fortunate to have so many and this locally owned Italian Bistro is located next to our legendary Broken Spoke – where you get ‘real’ country & western!
Located in South Austin it’s hope is to become a mainstay there and the South Lamar restaurant scene. Think Italian this week-end and give them a try!!
AROMA ITALIAN KITCHEN http://aromaitalian.com
Aroma’s entire menu is made from scratch with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. (Have you noticed how that’s becoming a very nice trend here in Austin?) Even the décor is local! Aroma Italian Kitchen features authentic Neapolitan pizza and homemade pastas along with a variety of fresh salads, cocktails and an impressive wine list.
A Neapolitan pizza is made using strict guidelines set down by the official governing body that outlines how Neapolitan pizza should be created in order to be considered “genuine”. How does Aroma make a true Neapolitan pizza? They start with the dough which is made of wheat flour, natural Neapolitan yeast, salt and water and then kneaded and formed by hand. The mozzarella they use is made in-house using milk from cows raised in West Texas in a semi-wild state. The tomatoes are from the volcanic plains on the south side of Mount Vesuvius. And, the oven they bake the pizza in? It’s kept at 900 degrees and will bake your pizza in only 60-90 seconds! Now, what will you find on their menu? Here’s a sample…On the appetizer menu: Polpette – housemade meatballs baked “nel sugo di pomodoro” and topped with melted mozzarella or about Calamari – grilled calamari with frisee, grapefruit, red onion, pistachios and EVOO. A couple pizza selections: Arugula E Prosciutto – mozzarella, parmesan, garlic, arugula, prosciutto and truffle oil. Or how about IL Maiale Intero – tomato sauce, mozzarella, pancetta, prosciutto, sausage and capocollo.
They also have selections called Mare E Terra (from the sea and earth): Pollo AL Mattone – brick pressed grilled chicken served with truffle fries or you could try Brasato Al Vino – red wine braised short ribs with mascarpone potatoes and wilted spinach. You will enjoy all of this on tables made from reclaimed wood that are covered with white linens and polished glassware in true Italian Bistro Style. Or you can enjoy Al Fresco dining on their fully shaded outdoor patio.
