One teacher trying to make a difference can mean a lot to the kids in a middle school. Any middle school.
But, we are lucky to have a real hero in our midst at Salk Middle School! She wants to make sure that students with disabilities have a decent chance at success, and she is working to make that happen for dozens of students who have a difficult time in a classroom
Mary Ostmoe happens to be one of the teachers at Salk who is involved with middle school students with developmental disabilities and kids on the autism spectrum.
She will be spending her summer raising money to raise funds for the screening and training costs of a service dog named Olaf.
If, strike that, when she can come up with $16,500, she will become the handler for the specially trained 5-year-old retriever. She has tapped friends, family and colleagues for the first $2,000.
Now, she needs our help! Check out this link to see more about her effort , and how she wants to incorporate Olaf into her curriculum to help kids that have problems learning become calm enough to listen and understand.
And, after you have read this account of her dedication, perhaps you will find $5 or $10 to help her help these kids.
