“Captured Moments” Photography Show
The Old Stone Room at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, West Virginia will host "Captured Moments", a diverse collection of photographs created by Ruth C. Sturgill of Ronceverte, West Virginia. The exhibit will open on July 7 and continue until August 30, 2014. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, July 24 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Ruth’s selection of photographs is all digital images though her interest in photography began at the age of 10 with film. It all started with a 35mm camera which was awarded to her when she won Junior Champion with one of her dairy animals at The State Fair of West Virginia. Her mother, the late Virginia Campbell of Pickaway in Monroe County, West Virginia, taught Ruth how to use the camera and taught her the concepts of creating interesting images. Ruth looked back on her experiences, “My mother insisted I start out making black and white pictures because she felt that I would learn a lot more about composition – I had no idea what that word meant at the time- and that sort of thing. Black and white film was a lot less expensive, but it was not long after that I convinced her to let me work with color. I loved working with color so much more.”
Virginia Campbell was a noted photographer during her later years. She began doing photography professionally during her 50’s, after Ruth had married and moved from home. She was active in the Princeton Camera Club and this also sparked an interest in Ruth joining the club. Ruth credits her involvement in Princeton Camera Club for being the catalyst for honing her skills and enabling her to create award winning photographs. She has won several area and state photography competitions.
Ruth is a graduate of Union High School and graduated from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky with a BA in Music Education. She also graduated from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies with a MA in Education Administration. She taught music for a number of years before becoming a WV Extension 4-H Agent for Greenbrier County, a position she held for over 14 years. She is married to William (Bill) Sturgill and since retirement they have enjoyed traveling and exploring throughout the United States.
