Decorating on a Shoestring Budget or Not?

I am never surprised when I head out to a house to show it to my clients, especially when we are looking at investment properties.

Foreclosures often turn up things that become interesting topics of discussion and this one was no exception.

Would this living room be considered decorating on a shoestring budget?

I bet they had a lot of fun doing it.

This picture was taken in the living room of a bank owned foreclosure offered for sale in Melbourne Beach, FL.

I have also seen this type of thing before.

Usually with a hard to cover color also.

Hi Sandy. A few years back when we had over 30,000 homes for sale per month inventory, we had numerous foreclosures/bank-owned. During those years we saw many foreclosed vacant homes whose walls, doors, cabinetry, and carpets had all kinds of decorative art work. It wasn't too difficult to read the anger, passion, and sadness in their art.

Definitely an interesting look, Sandy.  Hope whoever buys this home has a lot of paint.

I think I see a painting party in this homes future, Sandy.  I'm sure it had a special meaning to the owners.

William, I was thinking the same thing... this is probably going to take a few coats, as it will be hard to cover!

Toni, they probably had a great time doing it. That's for sure!  And you're right, it held some significance for the family that did it.

Bob, painting is one of the easiest things to change in a home. And, it's one of the things that can make the most difference, too.

Paul, I think that art really is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?

Jane, I agree, that back when we had so many foreclosures on the market, it never ceased to amaze the kinds of things that we found. I remember one gorgeous home where someone had taken about 20 bottles of nail polish and had thrown them and broken them all over the tile floors in the living room. It was such a shame.

Gabe, this house looked like it needed just about everything... paint, flooring, baths, a kitchen... you name it.

Gary, too funny. It's hard to tell exactly what prompted them to be so creative on the living room walls. Would have been interesting to hear how that conversation came about.
