Have Agents Left Active Rain Just Before Their Ship Came In?

blogging on active rain

I have spent the last couple of weeks contacting the Top 100 agents on their state's Leader Board and a surprising thing has surfaced. Many of these Top 100(per state) have not written a blog post since between 2009 and 2012 !!! As I've noticed this over and over I’'ve thought to myself, just what are these agents doing to market themselves(and listings). I mean clearly we are in the last days of print media and costly snail mail. Recent NAR surveys are proclaiming that nearly 100% of all buyers are starting their home search online. Then it dawned on me, have these agents left Active Rain just before their ship was set to come in?

You see the old school of real estate is still trying to wrap their head around the fact that

Blogging is Lead Generation ( http://actvra.in/4q ). Blogging as a form of Lead Generation is no different result-wise than old fashion door to door prospecting. But most former Active Rainers just don't get it ! You hear them say "I tried Active Rain (AR) and got nothing from it !" I hear this often and immediately attempt to look them up in AR. Guess what I keep seeing? The majority of them have less than 15,000 AR points ! Lack of points = lack of real effort. I mean they would be the first to remind me that you might have to knock on 100 to 200 doors to find a seller lead. Yet somehow they’ve deluded themselves to believe AR was the newest magic pill and that after 5-12 fledgling blog posts, they would be the "Listing Agent of the Month at their office.

So what are the realities of blogging as new age Lead Generation? No major difference, because blogging is also a numbers game. It's a process not an event. It's clearly a marathon not a quick fix sprint. It is a form of seed planting that we sew with a defined audience, faithfully believing with planned cultivation, we will one day harvest ! In my nearly 5 years on Active Rain , I have deliberately observed exactly which blogers were stating they were getting a good portion of their real estate business from AR. What was clearly visible (from AR's Leader boards) is that success seemed to be on the other side of

  • 1,000-1,500 well written and specifically directed blog posts, not 5-12 ! You see it takes great daily discipline (http://actvra.in/4jxs ) to write and launch 1,500 posts over several years ! Ah yes, the old 80/20 rule shows itself again here.

In his real estate/life changing book,The Millionaire Real Estate Agent, Gary Keller tells us that each agent really has TWO jobs, real estate and Lead Generation. I've choosen Active Rain blogging to be a huge part of my Daily Lead Gen discipline. Unfortunately, so many other former AR agents couldn’t see/comprehend that AR was far more than a website. But instead a huge differentiation tool and community of resources!

Sad, but these agents left Active Rain Just before their ship was set to come in !

I think you make some very valid points.

How true.

If I have a referral to give, my first action is to look at the leaderboard for the subject area for that lead. I interview and converse with the top agents in the area and choose from them. My referral does not go to an agent who does not work for it.

Michael,  thank you for the post.  I am new here to AR.  I have done blogging on my own before only to fall victim to my old habits.  Not following through or becoming restless with no quick tesults.  Bottom line I joined with a written commitment to myself.  The goal I walked backward to a weekly need.  This is based on points.  The points just being an easy way to keep me on track.   Recent posts are reminding me of the importance of quality.  Your post reminds of not only quality but commitment as well.

The less others blog the better for us. I've been learning a lot being part of this community. Blogging is important and it does generate good business.

Blogging works and makes the phone ring. Do it consistently and with good quality information and the leads do show up. My clients come directly from my blogging.

Blogging is a huge part of our business and lead generation.  It's been a part of our marketing strategy since 2008 and we won't be stopping anytime soon.

Hi Michael, interestingly, I've noticed and have been studying the same trend. There is a small anomaly that also points to a cessation when a certain amount of success in business has been attained. It appears that momentum may be a factor.

Michael, blogging works, but you have to give it the necessary time to start working. It is not a get rich quick scheme.

Blogging is a marketing tool, activerain is one platform for one tool.  An agent should have many tools and shouldn't keep all their tools in one box. One tool is not better than another just different. Different tools work for different folks.

For me it's always been about quality over quantity in all my marketing efforts.

I think your number of 1000+ is just ridiculous & would send anyone running for another lead generation technique. I don't believe it takes that much 'dedication' if that's what you want to call it.

I will challenge you here on a few issues, the google juice here on AR has changed & is NOT as good as it once was that's for sure. Nothing much AR HQ can do to change that but they have listened to many's questions with no resolutions. Many have dumped it for their own WP sites with better juice & exposure. Everything changes & we must change with it.

I'm a new to boggling but was wondering does it work for agents like myself in a smaller populated area such as South Georgia? What should I concern myself with when coming up with a topic? Suggestions are welcome, thanks.

1,000 to 1,500 posts? No wonder there is so much stuff out there that should never have been written. I go for quality over quantity any day.

Michael-This is a great thought provoking post. One of the commenters wrote that blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. Quality content consistenly delivered will get results in my opinion even google juice is diminished to some extent.

Well, I'm not that bad. But certainly could do a much better job of posts. Maybe the fact I can't type is holding me back?
