Newbie Realtor tip of the week: Be flexible but establish boundaries.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Christiansen Group Realty (260)704-0843

One of the main reasons most people get into real estate is for the flexible schedule.

It sure can be flexible!

Amanda and I work most evenings and almost every single weekend.

How does that sound for flexible?

No, really though, we do get our time off.

We often shop for groceries on Tuesday mornings, or go see a movie on a Thursday afternoon.

We work when our clients need us to work...  but at the same time, we establish boundaries.

We tell our clients early on that we are 100% open to showing them a home at 7:00 pm at night, or on a Sunday afternoon, as long as they give us notice.

We also tell them that we won't be available for texts or phone calls after 8:00 pm during the week or weekend unless there's a deadline approaching.

Trust me newbie agent, when you're juggling 10-15 clients/transactions at a time, you need time to breathe.

You need a little down time.

Getting texts/calls later in the evening when  you're trying to relax (and live your life) tend to wear you down.

You have to be flexible with your schedule, but also value your time and establish those boundaries.

If you're afraid of offending someone or losing a client because of this, that's probably a client you don't want to work with anyway.

If they can't respect that, they certainly won't respect you.

My two cents on a Saturday morning...

Jared: This is not only good advice for newbie agents but seasoned vets as well. It is easy to get caught in the 24/7 mentality and not make time to relax and unwind...both of which are very important to sustaining for the long haul in this industry.

Jared, now if I could only get Tom to go to the movies with me once a week. That would be a real treat.

Great advise all the way around.  I planned a little time off a few weeks away and have referred out ever single person that called to look at property during that time, with no regret.  I'll be so much more productive just getting away for a little.

Jared:

I agree with Anita.  This advice works well for seasoned professionals, as well as the newbies you write to.  Maybe even more so.

It's easy to get caught-up in the demands and stresses of business and everyone else's life.  You must remember that your own life is important too ... or you'll find it cut short.  I've seen it happen ...

Jared, suggested! This is advice that all of us can use. I like that you point out if an agent is afraid of losing a client by telling them they are flexible but, with boundaries it's probably not someone they want to work with. Spot on.

those boundries are important.  And if a buyer/seller is not willing to respect them, bye bye.

Jared, We have to set our own boundaries. I am able to say no pretty easily now but I let some clients call me late and really early.
