I Never Dreamed I'd Own a Tri-Corder

I was never a big fan of science fiction tv shows or movies when I was growing up. For some reason I did watch the original Star Trek tv show that began in the mid 1960s.

One of the futuristic devices used in most of the shows was a tri-corder. It seemed to serve multiple functions. It was a tri-corder, early versioncommunications device, it took scientific readings-body scans, atmospheric conditions, and geological readings.

That was over forty years ago and now many of us, and even kids, carry devices that perform multiple tasks with computing powers far in excess of anything predicted on Star Trek. (photo courtsey Forbes Magazine)

In just a couple of minutes I developed a list of the top ten uses my tri-corder performs for professional purposes:

  1. Communications-voice
  2. Communications-text
  3. Communications-internet
  4. Navigation-gps route planning
  5. Navigation-Waze-congestion avoidance
  6. Navigation-compass
  7. Photo and Video capture
  8. Opening Doors-eKey
  9. Transaction Management
  10. Financial Projections-calculator

How many individual tools or instruments would one need to take the place of the modern tri-corder?

As a real estate professional, I need cutting edge technology to be effective. Doesn't have to be the most expensive, but it does have to be effective.

The creators of Star Trek were visionaries for their time, but the creators of modern software and hardware have  really blazed past the "where no man has gone before" motto.

The tri-corder was cool. And I never thought I'd own a tri-corder as great as it was, but I'm glad the smart phone is available.

Wayne, I remember how futuristic those devices seemed back then!  If someone had told us what kind of devices we are using ourselves nowadays, we would not have believed it.

Hi Wayne, I remember when the flip phone came out, I thought I was on Star Trek exploring a new planet, but in reality, I was showing an abandoned forclosed home. Now that's an imagination!

Things have certainly changed, Wayne. When I started we had huge keys that turned at nobler on the lockbox.

We started using handheld computers in the woods for data collection when I was working in New Mexico in 85-87, and I am constantly impressed at all the new functions everytime that we upgrade, new ones including the tablets are amazing.  Captain Kirk would be impressed too

Cute, Wayne!  I never thought of it that way but, we have hundreds of apps now - 'tri' seems a bit antiquated when 40 years ago, it was something we could only dream of owning!

Thanks Wayne for the post. I would add technology today needs to actually work and not become another burden.

Thanks for vote of confidence asking if I am training to run the marathon. I am not suppose to run at all as I had hip replacement surgery Dec 2010. I now walk very fast on a treadmill as I could have the same old issue if I ran. These days i just wanting to be healthy. Working out becomes sort of addictive..
