I Never Dreamed I'd Own a Tri-Corder
I was never a big fan of science fiction tv shows or movies when I was growing up. For some reason I did watch the original Star Trek tv show that began in the mid 1960s.
One of the futuristic devices used in most of the shows was a tri-corder. It seemed to serve multiple functions. It was a communications device, it took scientific readings-body scans, atmospheric conditions, and geological readings.
That was over forty years ago and now many of us, and even kids, carry devices that perform multiple tasks with computing powers far in excess of anything predicted on Star Trek. (photo courtsey Forbes Magazine)
In just a couple of minutes I developed a list of the top ten uses my tri-corder performs for professional purposes:
- Communications-voice
- Communications-text
- Communications-internet
- Navigation-gps route planning
- Navigation-Waze-congestion avoidance
- Navigation-compass
- Photo and Video capture
- Opening Doors-eKey
- Transaction Management
- Financial Projections-calculator
How many individual tools or instruments would one need to take the place of the modern tri-corder?
As a real estate professional, I need cutting edge technology to be effective. Doesn't have to be the most expensive, but it does have to be effective.
The creators of Star Trek were visionaries for their time, but the creators of modern software and hardware have really blazed past the "where no man has gone before" motto.
The tri-corder was cool. And I never thought I'd own a tri-corder as great as it was, but I'm glad the smart phone is available.
