Special offer

Sayonara to the mortgage business. On to loftier heights!

Good morning! it is absolutely beautiful here.

Last Wednesday I started a brand new gig. Honestly, it was out of the blue. Let me back up a bit.

On June 3rd I showed up for work. This was after receving what sounded like an ominous phone call from the Regional VP the day before. He wanted to talk to me. Here's the picture. I was working in an office of one. When I started there were 6! I figured they were going to let me go. I was right. I no longer had a home.

I have to admit I wasn't crushed. God always has a plan and I figured that something else was in store. Add to that the fact that real estate can be a thankless business, especially mortgages these days. Perhaps I had worn out my welcome!

I knew I needed to find something quick or my money would run out. I had been supplementing my income with other very part time jobs. One of these was a part time positon at a janitorial company. I figured it would be good, hard work. It is indeed.

The part I didn't plan on was meeting the Operations Manager a few days later. He wanted to talk to me further. He indicated that they were considering adding a sales and customer service person to the staff. He asked me how much I needed to live on as a minimum and I threw out a figure. I then briefly met the owner. The Operations Manager suggested I talk to the owner so I did.

What started out as a conversation morphed into a real discussion about a new position to grow the business. After negotiating for about a week, I was given an offer which was mulled over. It helped that I got to visit the corporate headquarters in Idaho. The bottom line is I started this past Wednesday.

It is obviously a totally different business than mortgages although business is still business. What am I charged with doing on a day to day basis? I am responsible for growing the sales efforts at Environment Control by securing bids for contracts. We are the best at cleaning and building maintenance in the industry. Couple that with the company philosophy of always doing right by the customer and it explains why the business has been around for 50 years.

As for me, I feel like there's a breath of fresh air. I honestly felt pretty beat up by the mortgage business. I enjoyed it when I was helping people and doing loans. But there were too many times where I got too frustrated. Now I have a new opportunity that if you had asked me if I would ever been doing this I would have told you you were crazy.

Obviously, if you know of anyone who needs their building or office space cleaned, we would love to talk to them. You'll find we're honest, reliable, hard working and fair. Our territory is South Seattle to Olympia. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Paul, I hope we'll still see you in the rain regularly.  I wish you the best on your new venture - I've heard of many people who have left the mortgage industry over the past 5 years and have never been happier after their decision.  It is extremely tough right now - I'm sure you'll be great at the new gig!
