Vermont's water sports and waterways offer some of the most timeless, classic and fun ways to enjoy the outdoors!

Vermont is most commonly associated with rolling green mountains, vibrant fall foliage, healthy farms and organic maple syrup - but it's also home to thousands of rivers, streams, ponds and lakes.

It's only natural for most people to think of bucolic rural landscapes, sleepy historic villages bursting with quaint, white clapboard buildings and colonial architecture when they imagine Vermont. These things are true, of course. We love it! But beautiful villages are hardly all there is. Vermont also has a entire world of water sports, and no one can get enough - residents or visitors!

Exploring the fresh waters of Vermont has something for every adventurer. Whether you're canoeing, fishing, kayaking, tubing (our personal favorite), sailing, white water rafting, sailboarding, or swimming - you'll always be delighted!

Vermont has in excess of 800 lakes and ponds, a whopping 284 of which are larger than 20 acres (that's big. Really big). Rivers and streams wind around the state for more than 7,000 miles. Rivers like the Batten Kill, the Lamoille, the West and the Winooski are ideal for tubing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

The West River even has seasonal white water rafting!

Meanwhile, Lake Champlain covers a swathe of 435 square miles. At just over 120 miles long with 212 miles of Vermont shoreline, Lake Champlain forms an enormous portion of Vermont's western border with New York. Lake Champlain is ideal for just about any water sport you can think of, including underwater exploration of ship-wrecks from its nautical past!

For the ultimate in relaxation, there are a number of bodies of water in Vermont that allow only non-powered water craft. Paddling your kayak or canoe on one of these still-water gems is an unforgettable way to experience Vermont's natural world, while treating yourself to the pinnacle of pristine calm.

Whatever your water sport passion may be - whether you're seeking a thrill or seeking serenity - there is just the right body of water in Vermont, waiting for you.

We'll see you out there!
