Trails

Maps for all hiking trails can be obtained from the NY/NJ Trail Conference (201-512-9348) at 156 Ramapo Valley Rd, Mahwah, NJ 07430. NY/NJ Trail Conference maps can also be bought at the Information Center on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Bear Mountain (845-786-5003) betqween exits 16 and 17. And at the Museum of the Hudson Highlands in Cornwall.

CAUTION. Some parks are closed to hikers during hunting season in November and December. Check with either the park or the Department of Environmental Conservstion (845-986-0588) for restrictions.

Appalachian Trail
Spanning from the New Jersey border to the Hudson River (about 35 miles), the trail was founded here in 1923. A lengthy portion offers scenic views of Greenwood Lake. It also winds its way through the Bear Mountain Wildlife Center, the most popular section of the entire trail.

Black Rock Forest

Northwest of West Point, marked and unmarked trails ranging from short walks to long hikes. Fires, bathing and camping prohibited. Visitors board, maps and other materials available at parking lot on southbound lane of 9W.

Crows Nest

Route 9W south of Storm King Mountain. No marked trails, faint paths, good views.

Delaware River Heritage Trail

A 6-mile trail created to allow walkers to enjoy the city's historic sites and river vistas that have been immortalized in photographs, songs, paintings, and literature. Directions and a description of the walk with highlights are available..

Heritage Trail
Goshen, Chester & Monroe

Converted railbed of the Erie Railroad. Walk, jog and bike on this scenic route. Trail entrances in Goshen, Chester and Monroe. Eventually a 20 mile trail will be cleared from Middletown to Harriman along the railbed.

Highlands Trail

35 mile trail traversing some of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the rugged highlands region including many parks, forests and natural areas. Traveling along the Appalachian Trail, abandoned rail lines, Museum Village, lakes, over Schunnemunk Mountain, through Black Rock Forest and to the top of Storm King Mountain overlooking the Hudson River.

Moonbeam Preserve

150 acre preserve with views of the Shawangunk Ridge. Unmarked forest trails and some mowed fields open for nature study and quiet recreation.
