Roswell Georgia  plans to go Dark for Earth Hour

Last year in Syndey, Australia, an an effort to fight global warming, all non-essential lights were turned off for an hour.  The use of power dropped 10% during that hour.

Tomorrow, March 29th, Roswell Georgia officials are asking it's 90,000 residents and businesses do the same thing.  The event is being organized around the world by World Wildlife Fund, a conservation organization.  Locally in Roswell, this effort is being organized by the non-profit organization, Keep Roswell Beautiful.

What can you do to participate???

On March 29th, from 8 - 9pm, turn off all lights that are not needed to live.  Streetlights and other public safety-designed lighting will stay lit.  You don't have to live or have a business in Roswell Georgia to participate.

Hi Nancy,

Very interesting, and a great idea.  It would be wonderful if the entire US could do this!  Actually, our house doesn't usually have a lot of unnecessary lights on...though my kids are famous for leaving their bedroom lights on when they're not in there and I'm always going in and shutting them off...the other night I turned the light off on my daughter who was reading!!  Had no idea she was in there, and she was not amused.  LOL

Nicely-written blog.  He he.  Nancy, you stole my thunder!  :)  I heard about this on the radio driving in to the office today and was all set to blog about it.  I guess I'm too slow.

Karen - Funny about turning the lights off on your daughter.  I've done that to Hubby while he was in the bathroom!

Lisa- Mine's rolled off the first page!  Post your own for Maitland!  The more that know, the better!  :-)

Nancy, this is a great idea. I have to agree with Karen in that we do not seem to keep unnecessary lights on when we are home. We also use the 7 year energy efficient bulbs.

Nancy, thanks for posting about the earth hour.  My wife had mentioned the concept earlier today and I think it's a great idea.  Certainly the more exposure we provide for the concept, the more awareness and likely positive the result!

Great idea Nancy, Is that just local, I have not heard of this being done elsewhere? Also take an energy audit of your home and turn off the energy vampires. These are all those little electrical components, lights, plug-ins, etc that use small amounts of energy and are not really needed.

wow, an hour?  if you really want to make an impace, do it for a night. that would be a sacrifice. use some candles. funny, you think you change anything with AN HOUR?? and like a typical left wing idea, there is no plan, no follow for furthering the agenda. lolol.

An hour is really not a long time. But for some reason,I didn't hear about it that much. This is a great idea. A lot of times we have lights on that needs to be turned off. Great post.

Nancy, We use those energy efficient bulbs and turn off lights when not needed. I did not really hear about the turning off lights for a hour.  Does it count when you are sleeping? LOL.  Thanks for reading and commenting on my post about serious sellers.

I am sorry I missed this event. I would have loved to participate as I have been trying to get my kids and husband to realize the extent of non-essential electricity we burn in our house.

Nancy: I am surprised in Sydney it was only a 10% reduction. Will they provide a measurement for your area?

Hi Thesa - the 'Earth Hour' was last month.  :-)  Hubby and I spent the hour walking the dog and then sitting on the couch actually having real conversation.  :-)  It was delightful!

HA - Very funny Karen!

Have actually been very busy.  Working from midnight til 8am at AT&T and then the Real Estate Schtick during what ever daylight and evening hours my clients need me.  I try to comment when I can but haven't really had time to write a real post!  I'm hoping to do one soon though!

Thanks for stopping buy.

It went great.  Having no TV or PC on in the house makes for having good conversation with family members!  Of course, I feel we did our wee little part in saving a wee little bit of power.  Makes me think twice before leaving a room without turning off lights, powering off PC's, etc.
