For those who follow my blog, you know from time to time, I share my property with some really interesting critters. I live close to the American River Parkway, and a number of them find their way to my habitat, to spend a little time now and then.
Usually, I find them interesting and not much bother to have around. There were cute raccoons that ceased to be so adorable when they raided my fish pond in the middle of the night. And, more recently a mother Possum, with 8 babies who liked the digs in back of my tool shed!
I’ve found an easy test for determining the difference between a critter and a varmint. And, I’ve determined the difference is the same as between a flower and a weed. A varmint is a nuisance that is existing where it isn’t supposed to. . .Just like a weed!
This week, I have been back to doing battle with another mole, which has taken up residency beneath by front lawn.
The “experts” tell me that moles are solitary critters. But, it is hard to fathom that a single varmint could wreck so much havoc. The good news is the lawn won’t need to be aerated anytime soonJ
Why can’t the little devil move on over to the local park, where a resident gopher (pictured above) resides? The gopher is especially smart. He has the entrance to his tunnel right next to a picnic table. When he pokes his head out periodically, park visitors often feed him a few tidbits and take his picture.
The cute little gopher (a critter) knows his place in the world, and that it isn’t in my yard. But, that dang mole (a varmint) doesn’t seem to have a clue. He’s gonna become history if I can capture him. Does anyone have a clue about how I might do that?
