Wishing A Certain Varmint Would Relocate

For those who follow my blog, you know from time to time, I share my property with some really interesting critters.  I live close to the American River Parkway, and a number of them find their way to my habitat, to spend a little time now and then.

Usually, I find them interesting and not much bother to have around.  There were cute raccoons that ceased to be so adorable when they raided my fish pond in the middle of the night.  And, more recently a mother Possum, with 8 babies who liked the digs in back of my tool shed!

Folsom Gopher

I’ve found an easy test for determining the difference between a critter and a varmint.  And, I’ve determined the difference is the same as between a flower and a weed.  A varmint is a nuisance that is existing where it isn’t supposed to. . .Just like a weed!

This week, I have been back to doing battle with another mole, which has taken up residency beneath by front lawn.

The “experts” tell me that moles are solitary critters.  But, it is hard to fathom that a single varmint could wreck so much havoc.  The good news is the lawn won’t need to be aerated anytime soonJ

Why can’t the little devil move on over to the local park, where a resident gopher (pictured above) resides?  The gopher is especially smart.  He has the entrance to his tunnel right next to a picnic table.  When he pokes his head out periodically, park visitors often feed him a few tidbits and take his picture.

The cute little gopher (a critter) knows his place in the world, and that it isn’t in my yard.  But, that dang mole (a varmint) doesn’t seem to have a clue.   He’s gonna become history if I can capture him.  Does anyone have a clue about how I might do that?

Myri,  I got rid of my ground moles in a very unusual way,  I posted a blog about it back on June 12th.  Feel free to read it and I'd love if it you would leave a comment.  I haven't seen a trace of them since I used my cure (homemade lye soap).

Myrl, it would seem that one of my cats is a mouser, the other a mole-er. If it is true the are solitary varmints then this one my cat keeps killing has a million lives. But I suspect that was a rumor started by some very crafty moles to keep us from shoving dynamite down the mole holes and wiping out their entire cities. I can't even walk on my yard anywhere without sinking in their tunnels. And sometimes when it rains real hard there are water spouts along their tunnel systems! So I'm the wrong one to ask,

Best of luck!

I love that you can still keep your sense of humor Myrl! I have no clue how to get rid of a mole ... I'm sorry. I'm always chasing squirrels out of my flower beds and pots. Last winter one of them buried a slice of pizza in a pot that sits right next to my sliding glass doors. I wish I had gotten a picture of that.

Good luck Myrl, I hope you'll get rid of the uninvited visitor soon.

Myrl, Our home is surrounded by woods and we have similar issues!  Raccoons that thing the cat food belongs to them IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.  Possoms, voles and shrews, all kind of critters who cross over to the dark side and become VARMINTS!

Tammie - If you live on 5 acres, you might have more than a solitary mole.  I live on city lot.  I'm told I probably only have one.

Lou - Yes, it can be really challenging!  My neighbor suggested pouring Clorox down the hole, and then covering it with a rock!

Sybil - I'll check out what you wrote, and see if anyone left useful comments there.

Andrea S. - Had it been legal, this afternoon I was at that DYNAMITE stage:-)

Andrea B. - A squirrel that stores pizza for a rainy day.  Now, that's my kind of critter!

Liz and Bill - "Crosses over to the darkside."  I like that analogy!

I had gophers in my front yard digging and digging for a year and had quite the tunnel system below when we dug up all the shasta daisies. Now the bunnies are after the flowers.

Hi Myrl, You could try calling him on his cell and trying to reason with him. If that fails, a bow and arrow might do and if that doesn't work, just call the city and have him arrested for trespassing, LOL

At first I thought that was a mountain beaver Myrl but I'm glad to hear that It was a gopher which is a little easier to get rid of…

Kristen - I have a cute little bunny that comes to visit my home too.  I'm pretty sure it's been someone's pet, because it has shorter ears, and is a pretty buff-grey color.  My male cat Reuben plays tag with it.  They are buddies.

William - That darn varmint is relentless.  I wish I could have him arrested for vandalism:-)

Paul - The little gopher pictured, lives at a nearby park.  He knows his place in life.  But, the mole in my yard, is another story.

Sheila - Thanks for the "suggest."  My neighbor has a large dog that likes to dig.  She has suggested that I borrow her dog for awhile.  But, I fear the cure would be worse than the disease.

I love the analogy of the differences between a critter and a varmint Myrl.

It is hard to keep them out of your yard, especially when you have an acreage like I do. Plus the neighbors have to be trying to do the same.

Myrl, Tammie and I live on those five acres she mentioned and since I'm the mower, truth is, she doesn't really care about the moles! One of the ways of getting rid of them might make you a little squeamish. I know you can flood them out by putting a hose into the burrow. I've done this. Unfortunately when they surface you have to be prepared for hand to hand combat! Ugh.

I've had clients with that problem. You can call the varmint exerminators. They will get rid of them, and if you don't want to know the specifics of how they do it, which you probably would not want to know, they don't have to describe it in detail. You just pay them and the varmint problem is eradicated, kinda like the Mafia.

Myrl, we have moles in the upper part of our yard. I was told there is a person in town that gets rid of them...may have to call him.

Myrl, that is one big, fat varmit!  Our gophers are skinny around here.  That guy is so rotund he looks like a WOODCHUCK!
