Is Obsessive List-Making a Form of Visualization?

By

I love lists. I love lists. Checking an item off a to-do list gives me a rush. Always has.

As a result, I'm pretty darn efficient. If something gets on my list, it gets done. I've always patted myself on the back for my organization skills and my ability to get lots of stuff done in a timely manner.

But then it occurred to me... isn't list-making a form of checkmarkVisualization?

I'm a Franklin Planner kinda gal. Have been since 1992 when my employer Great-West Life included a full day of Franklin Planner training in their orientation program. I'm not remotely interested in switching over to a PDA/Blackberry/Treo or whatever, although I will confess I do love my Top Producer to-do lists...

So, every morning, I write down my list of things I need to do that day. With my very own hand, my very own pen. And most of the time, everything I write down gets done; if not that day, usually by the next.

‘Cause I'm so cool? Maybe. But maybe not. Maybe it's just Visualization in Action - I write it down, I look at it several times throughout the day, I get great pleasure from checking it off.

I just looked at my Dry-Erase board on my wall. A few months ago, I wrote down a bunch of projects that I wanted to get done when time permitted - for example, finish up my Charming Old Denver website, create the index for the 2nd edition of SWS, come up with a new subtitle for the 2nd edition of SWS; stuff like that. And whaddya' know? Almost ALL of the items written on that board are done! Yowsa!

I love this stuff.

Happy Friday and great post, Jennifer! Lists are wonderful - I never thought of them as 'visualizations' before, but I agree with you. And I do have a Treo... but I'm never more than 6 feet away from my steno book. Every day gets a new page, and I try to use it for all my note-making throughout the day. This way I'm never clamoring for that little stickie note where I put that one phone number - all my notes are in one place.

Have a great day!

Jennifer, I'm very visual when it comes to getting things done.  If it's not on the list, it's not top of mind for me.  Or could that just be age?  :)

JA,

It's refreshing to hear someone else talk about lists in this technological age. I find myself writing lists and making notes all day long even though I carry a PDA. But I neve rthought about the visualization aspect. Now I know I am not an obsessive compulsive person.

Make it a great day.

I am so not a list maker.  Well, I'll make a list, then lose it...

Hey, Jennifer... I just ran across this saying and thought of your post:

"I'm not writing it down to remember it later, I'm writing it down to remember it NOW."

LOL - so true!

I'm a check-off my list thrives me kinda gal. So, I absolutely know what you mean by visualization. I just use a table-top memo board to list of names I need to follow up with and I've been using my Outlook as my to-do list.

I like lists as well. I like the feeling of accomplishment when something gets checked off, because it's been accomplished. I'm a technology geek! And my Pocket PC/Smart Phone has the "Tasks" feature. But I quickly realized that feature wouldn't work for me because you just delete the task when it's finished.  There's no sense of satisfaction in that.

Jennifer.

I make lists in my head, but rarely write them down. I can remember what I need to do ... most of the time, and when I don't I say to myself "gee, I should have written that down somewhere!

Richard - while I don't think we as adults are gonna change much, you might try falling in love with a to-do list... imagine what heights you could climb to if you actually DID write that down somewhere!

Lisa - good point! Everyone tells me I should get a pda, but I've been resistent - I think that's why!

Loreena - from my most over-achieving friend/agent... I knew you'd get it.

Jenn - Yes! Kind of like the OHIO principle - Only Handle it Once...

Karen - well it seems to work for ya!

D. Bass - I didn't realize until fairly recently that other people don't live by their to-do list. How do they survive?

My "to do" list comes from my "todays business" in top producer..it works for me as long as the list is not more than 25 items.

Jennifer-

I was a Franklin Planner gal for years and years and one day switched to a pocket pc.  It just isn't the same no matter how hard we try.  I did like the Franklin software where you could put your to do lists in and then they were neatly printed out onto your binder pages.  It was great because if you didn't get the task done one day it automatically entered it onto the next day.  I think part of the whole process was devoting the time to make the lists and thinking and planning.

I am finding more luck with my Palm smart phone though.  I think it is because you can walk away from your PDA but you don't walk away from your phone.  It makes a noise and we don't ignore it.  But I have to agree that lists are a form of visualization!

I have a to do list of minor things that I must do throughout the day. I hand write that, as you do. But I never thought of the visualization aspect of it. It's there, just didn't put the 2 together. Thank you.

For the bigger to do's, I have a computer list. At the end of that list, I have a monthly list of the things I accomplished. I can now look back as the months/years go by and say, "Wow, I actually accomplished a lot last year. Nothing can stand in my way if I am able to do all that". It kind of gives you motivation and pride to see all that you've accomplished.

I love lists!!!! Lists are my life. I spend more time writing lists than I do anything else in the day.I love bullet points too. They tidy things up. However my handwriting is so messy I often can't read what I've written so have to write the lists up all over again.

I'm creative, visual, almost dyslexic in that I don't understand anything unless I see a picture, a photo a diagram or step by step instructions, colour codes a good too.

If I have an idea I have to write it down or its gone! Without my pen and a note book I feel lost, like there's something missing, almost anxious.

Am I going mad? Or is my life just a mess at the moment?

Great blog.  I gues the point is...whatever works for whomever...is good!  I got away from the planner and, I got away from an equal amount of production.  It's one of my resolutions...get back to basics...list making is great.  Thanks for the reinforcement and encouragement.  Happy New Year
