Port Richey, FL Goldenrain Tree Is Magnificent

We were out and about yesterday; showing homes, and came across this magnificent Goldenrain Tree. This one covers the entire backyard of the gray home (it's their tree) and part of the home next door. The owner was outside and was very happy to answer our questions.

She said it was started as a twig 23 years ago. Blooms every three years (which I have been unable to confirm) and grows like a weed wherever the seeds drop. In fact, she offered us some starters which we politely said no to. Wouldn't the golf course love that growing everywhere!

Golden Raintree in Florida Is Magnificent

I Googled the tree and found out it's originally from India. It grows to about 35 to 40 feet tall and can spread 35 feet wide. It is considered an Invasive plant.

I read some of the comments about the tree, many were not complimentary especially from neighbors. The tree drops dead flowers everywhere and seeds fly all over and grow where they land. Someone said she spends the entire summer digging up baby Golden Raintrees. If someone offers you a baby, think twice before you plant it.

But this Port Richey, FL Goldenrain Tree Is Magnificent. I wanted to take the picture from full front but couldn't get that one without walking through an uncut field which is never a good idea in Florida; especially in sandals.

Toni: It looks pretty from afar but if it's invasive you can bet it will quickly take over like this one has.

Hi Toni.  I remember the goldenrain trees when I lived in Orlando.  They bloom yellow in the summer but the flowers turn orange in the fall.  It was the only color change that indicated fall had arrived!

Toni, that is a beautiful tree, but would not want a bunch of starters coming up all over the yard.

Anita, it is highly invasive.

Joan, you're right. It the leaves get kind of rosy orange. It's just as pretty then.

Kristin, it is beautiful but a lot of work.

Tony, thanks, you too.

Toni, it may be a "magnificent" tree, but when it comes to plants that are not indigenous to an area you really need to reconsider.  Kudzu for example has become a huge problem in the south...very invasive.

What I find amazing is that I also had one growing in my yard in Germany! They seem to grow everywhere!

That tree is a stunner alright!  The fact that it volunteers seeds though would stop me in my tracks.  I had 4 Texas Privet trees that volunteered 100s of babies each year, and kept me very involved saying, "no-no."  I finally had them removed earlier this spring.

Toni, a beautiful tree to look at, but I think I will pass based on the comments you were able to find with your research.  Invasive and messy are not what I need in our yard.  Thanks for all this great information!

Hi Toni, Thats a gorgeous site to enjoy while looking at homes.  Thanks for sharing.  It looks like a substantial tree if you have a ton of land and need privacy.
