Summer Vacation in 1947,

How About in a Camper Trailer?

In 1952, Our family took a Summer Vacation from southern Michigan to California and back, visiting all the popular sites. We, of course didn't have the luxuries of today.  We stayed in motels along Route 66. It was a vacation to remember, but what if we decided to have a pull behind trailer.

First of all, we couldn't have done it in a car, going up and down the rocky mountains, because there were no interstates and four-lanes back then. They were lucky to have guard rails. Then there would be the choice of trailer. The one in the above photo is a 1947 Westwood Coronado. That would be the higher class way of travel. In the lower photo, you have the option of pulling it with a car, but look at what you sacrifice.  How would you like to live in that for a month?

You can see both of these trailers and more at the RV and Motor Home Hall of Fame, located in Elkhart, Indiana, just off Interstate I-80/90 at exit 96.

Are you taking a vacation this year and how are you traveling?

Larry, As a kid my parents had a Starcraft V pop up camper.  We spent a lot of weekends at the nearby lake, and a couple of longer vacations in the Great Smokies and San Antonio.

Hi Evelyn, How can I forget. I think they wanted $800. for it.  We settled for an 18 ft. motor home instead.

Hi Bliz, Those pop up camper sure are handy. Evelyns parents had one. It came in handy at the family reunion in Oregon.

There is no doubt I would have gone crazy staying in a trailer for a month.  My parents lent us their Airstream (think it was a 12 footer)  back in the very early 70s for a "little vacation: at the lake.  The first few days were good, but with a 3 month old, it became "old" quickly.

Hi Bette, I can guess all that you went through, with a 3 month old. Aren't you glad those days are over?

LOL! Not really, if I could live those days over again, I would have done so many things differently.
