Why I Don't Work Sundays

By
Real Estate Agent with Diamond Partners, Inc

Why I Don't Work Sundays. I know there are a lot of people out there who believe that real estate agents work 7 days a week.  I am not one of those.  There are a lot of real life reasons I don't and some that are just beyond the grasp of a lot of people.  I work 6 days a week typically, and host open houses on Saturdays rather than Sundays.

The real life reason why I don't work on Sundays include those tasks that I am not able to do during the other six days.  Things like grocery shopping, weeding the flower beds, cleaning the house, doing the laundry and all the other chores that take concerted amounts of time.

The other less tangible reason why I don't work Sunday is that my brain and body need a day off.  A day not to think about my job (which I love) and spend time with family (whom I love more) without being interrupted by the phone or email or texts.  A day to take stock and be grateful for the gifts and challenges, relationships and beauty with which I have been blessed.

When I don't work Sundays the rest of my week is smoother, with fewer "crisis" situations.  My brain is able to better and more quickly problem solve with the situations that arise.

And I am up front with my clients, setting my work schedule when I first meet with them.  I work from 7:30 to 7:30 Monday through Friday, and 8 am to 4:30 pm on Saturdays.  That is almost 70 hours a week.  That is enough.  This is why I don't work on Sundays.

I will work early Sunday afternoons if needed but also find some escape time during the rest of the week. Life is too short

Very intersting point.  Many times it is so important to take time for yourself and your family.  Life/work balance is a needed to continue working well and to keep a happy family. Thanks for sharing.

Ed, I will show on Sundays to a buyer who is at risk of being homeless, but that is all.  I do my best to find out when we put their house on the market if there is a plan for somewhere to live if we get their house under contract and don't yet have another picked out.  It helps when we negotiate the offer on their property and most of the time we can keep them out of the "homeless" situation.

Rob, I just can function very well without the down time.

You work hard and deserve that time to do "your" things. You also have to take that time to keep yourself healthy. If you are already working a 70 hour work week, that time off is very important. You obviously care about your clients, so you have to care just as much about yourself. Keep up the good work. I just keep getting more and more impressed by the job you do!!!!

Thank you, Julie. The 70 hour work week is less than I did as a theatre teacher!  I am sure that it is less than you do!

Good for you! I made this decision several years ago before "the crash" and slowly got away from it. Now that my kids are out of the house it's easier for me to take a day during the week and work Sundays if needed. The important thing is that we take some time for ourselves without feeling guilty.

Colleen, thank you for the comment.  I guess I just put it out there because I had gotten away from it and was trying to re-establish it.
