For the uninitiated, the major musical event of our calendar year is about to unfold here in Tompkins county. No doubt, the area is known for high quality music year-round. However this event really captures a lot of what the Fingerlakes, and Trumansburg & Ithaca specifically are about.
It's about the weather! Songs have been written about the "Ithaca Weather" , which can be all over the map in 15 minutes! There is usually at least one rainy day during the festival, and one heat wave!
There are tents! It's about camping and imbibing in interesting beverages and sampling the many outrageous food offerings, including lucious fare from Macro Mamas, Solas, and Stone Cat Cafe - you WILL find many yummy things here. Just wish they would bring in a caramel apple person, personally!
It's about the most awesome line-up of live music, from near and far, that you are going to encounter in the region for, at least a year when they do it all over again. This year the headliners include, on Wednesday night (pre-festival event) Keller Williams with the Travelin' McCourys, Anders Osborne, Locos Por Juana, and the ever-locally loved Sim Redmond Band. Something for everyone without a doubt.
It's about world peace! In the past there were offerings of "Dances for Universal Peace", however it looks like this has been discontinued since the last time I was there. But, take a stroll through the festival grounds on Sunday at 2pm because the HAPPINESS PARADE will be ON as per usual - this is the ultimate expression of the Trumansburg/Ithaca spirit, I feel. Very akin to the Ithaca Festival but different! Must see!
When you are tired and weary from all the happy vibes (haha) and all the dancing at the dance tent and in the infield, you can walk your tired soles/soul over to the Healing Arts tent for some loving and healing from the talented team there - maybe you might want to shower before you go? Just maybe?? They do have showers on the premises so you can present yourself to your healers, all fresh and clean!
People, this is the best money you will spend on music and fun in one package ever, so don't hesitate - buy the whole weekend pass and hang in for the good times at Fingerlakes Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance!
