As agents we are always preparing for showings, listings and closings. We stress over the listing presentation, and worry that the home that we know is perfect for our clients, may be under contract before they arrive in town
Have you ever looked at the parallel with our children as they prepare to leave for college. The stress that they have in deciding on a school, did they make the right choice, will they get the classes they need.
My oldest leaves for college in a couple of weeks and is very carefree in her transition. My youngest is more reserved and analytical and wants to review every detail. I ask her to write a short summary about her preperation and was amazed at the thought she put behind this. Last week she had her first college interview at Wake Forest University and I honestly believe she was as prepared as any student could be. I ask her to write about her journey and I must brag on her.....I was impressed.
Preparing for College
by Austin Offnick
As a rising high school seriou, my entire life currently revolves around one thing, and one thing only -- COLLEGE. College applications, college tours, college interviews, the list is never ending. A time in my life that always seemed so far away is now right around the corner, and it's scary.....but it doesn't have to be. With a little planning and patience, your college search can be a lot less stressful and a lot more exciting.
When I first started to take college seriously, a million questions immediately raced through my mind. Do I want to stay local? Do I want to go out of state?? What do i want to study? Do I want to go to a big university or a small private college? And of course, how much do I want to pay? In order to organize my thoughts and prevent myself from having an anxiety attach, I created a list which descrived my wants and needs when looking for a school. By doing this, I was able to narrow down my school search and determine my college essentials, YAY!!!! A resource that was etremely beneficial with this task was the college board. Their website, www.collegeboard.org, has a tool what compares schools located all over the United States and other countries with your lists of wants and needs. It then gives you a list of the colleges that would be good match. This is a wonderful website loaded with information, so I highly recommend that you check it out.
Once you have some schools in mind, do your research!!! What is campus live like? What are the cities surrounding the school? What club, faternities or sororities are available? Does the school offer financial aid? How much? Etc. Also, don't feel like you have to stare at a computer screen all day; your high school counselors can be a plethora of information as well, so take the opportunity to discuss different colleges with them. Better yet, if you have friends or family who are current students or alumi of the schools that you are interested in, talk to them too. You can never be too prepared when it comes to getting ready for college, so dont be afraid to dive head first into the research process. That being said, it is okay to be overwhelmedat first. In fact, it is completely normal. I would be worried in you weren't overwhelmed, but just remember that you are not alone.
This is an amazing time in your life that you should share with your family and friends. So good luck and start researching.
