4th of July in La Jolla, CA
The 4th of July is my favorite holiday of the year, tied with Thanksgiving. A holiday to me means relaxing and spending time with loved ones. It also means great food, good drinks, and great company. This year, I had all of the above.
My day started out with a great surprise - my younger brother flew into town from New Jersey earlier than expected. I hadn't seen him since Christmas so it was great to be surprised by his arrival first thing in the morning. Our afternoon was spent on Huntington Beach, fighting waves, baking in the sun (I'm now 50 shades of red), and sharing plenty of laughs - it was crowded, but was a great time nonetheless. The sand was hot, the skies were blue, the water warm, and the cooler full - I couldn't have asked for a better beach day.
At night my girlfriend and I headed down to my favorite place in California (so far, at least), La Jolla. We like to venture down into San Diego county from time to time and one of our favorite spots is the Cliffhanger Cafe, a small spot atop the cliffs above Blacks Beach next to the gliderport. I thought this would be a pretty great spot to catch fireworks, and I wasn't disappointed. Normally, the area closes at 8pm (before sundown this time of year) but there was quite a crowd and the gates remained open on this night. The fireworks, as expected, were great - from our vantage point we were able to see at least 6 shows from San Diego heading north up the coast line several miles. The best part, though (by far) was the sunset from the gliderport field. It was my first time watching the sunset from this high (the cliffs are between 2-300 feet above the shore) over the horizon, and it was spectacular.
If you're ever in the area, a sunset here is something you really don't want to miss.
