Among the memorable moments in the Margaret Mitchell's southern epic Gone with the Wind was the line:
“Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything.”
The land always matters - and this is your chance to accept stewardship of a piece of land with history entwined with the American southern story - part of the original land grant period when middle Georgia was settled. Settler Thomas Grimes acquired a 200 acre in 1786, when Greene County was established as Georgia's 11th County and named after Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene.
By 1810, Joseph Moore had acquired 100 acres, and built the single pen log home, with hand-hewn log walls with 1/2 dovetail corner notching. It has a central door, sleeping loft, and massive exterior end stone chimney flanked by small windows.
The C. 1841 main home shows the transformation from one generation to the next as the frontier became more settled. Moore's daughter and her husband built a larger and more prestigious house, indicating they were no longer a "frontier family" but were here to stay. The Plantation Plain (or Georgia I-House) consists of two rooms over two rooms, with a shed porch to the front and shed to the rear with exterior end chimneys.
The farm has been continuously operated for morethan 200 years, by a series of families. The current owner purchased the property in 1985, and restored the two homes with the assistance of preservation architect W. Lane Greene. The homes were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
The farm is fenced for livestock, and includes the two historic homes plus a caretakers cottage and several outbuildings, with 77+/- acres The land is level and predominantly pasture, with a 2+/- acre pond towards the front of the property, and a clear 12+/- acre stocked lake at the year.
The farm is offered for sale for $1,060,000
The farm is located just 5 minutes off I-20 Exit 138, close to Lake Oconee, Georgia’s second largest lake, with more than 19,000 acres of boating and fishing fun. Managed by Georgia Power, Lake Oconee offers stable lake levels year round. Lake Oconee is a Top Ten Golf Resort Destination, with 189 holes of private and public access golf. Georgia’s Lake Country offers recreation for the whole family, including golf, boating, fishing, and hunting, as well as equestrian sports.
