Everyone has security on their computer to protect themselves from viruses, malware (malicious software) and the like. But have you thought about the fact that your smartphone is also a computer? And it is just as vulnerable to cyber attack as your laptop.

According to technology website CNET, malware can collect your call and text logs, contacts, account information, and SIM card details. It can place ads on your phone, change your browser home page or even subscribe you to paid services without your permission.

Android is the primary target for malicious apps, so your Android tablets and phones are most susceptible. Security firm RiskIQ found that the percentage of apps in the Google Play store that were malicious jumped from 3 percent in 2011 to almost 13 percent in 2013. Yet many of us shop and download without giving security a thought.

There are steps you can take to protect your smartphone from malware:

  • Be cautious about what apps you choose. Pay attention to bad reviews and questionable permissions.
  • Download apps from legitimate app stores, which monitor and scan the apps they have available.
  • Check your settings and make sure Google’s malware scanner is enabled.
  • Install a security app, but do your homework first and find one that’s been highly rated, such as Lookout Mobile Security, Avast! or 360 Mobile Security.
  • Watch your credit card and bank statements to make sure you aren’t being charged for something without your permission.
