Favicons are those little icons you see in the address bar next to the http:// at the top of a web page.

Favicon

I always wondered how they were created and placed in the address bar. I stumbled upon it and decided to create my own from an image I have on my computer. You can actually use any image you want or you can find free ones availble on the net.

I used the following website to create our Favicon you see above.

Or you can go to Favicon Generator and create yourself one.

Once you download your Favicon you will need to unzip the file and upload it to your website in your root directory and then you will need to place the following line of code after the <head> tag of your index page: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

It is best to use a square graphic and of course I used a round one and I will probably change it after I post this.

I was able to place the line of code in our Wordpress blog in the header file.

I guess picking the right one helps and it wasn't that hard. Hopefully you will try and do it.

Oh!  I just asked my wife how to do this and she said she would show me this weekend.  Now I will surprise her and do it myself.

Very interesting.  There are few other sites that do the same thing.  I usually, have my graphic artist  enhance the image so it won't display faint when you use it on your website.  This is useful if you want to brand your site.

Jay - you have to help me understand why I would need a favicon? Is it more for an outside blog?

Hey George - Red Sox rule:)

Hi Jay, Boy I feel in a tech mood today....3 word press blogs all in one sitting, and I don't even have one LOL :)  How do you pronounce this word Favicon?  Can you divide it up into syllables for me?

Slowly, I listen to CD's everyday for at least an hour. I can understatnd a lot more than I did 3 months ago but I stil find it hard to get the words out of my mouth to form a coherent sentence.

By th etime I try and say something everyone else on the phone has moved on to another topic. So I just laugh a lot.

Once you are in Germany you will be surprised at how much you will pick up, and how much you have learned :)  The trip is still on for this summer isn't it?

Hi, Jay! I just created my Favicon - thank you!!

However, once I created it with the Favicon Generator you posted...I got stuck. Unfortunately, I don't know what a "root directory" is, nor do I know how to find my index page. Can you help??

Thanks in advance! =)

Maura, you will need to know how to access all your files on your website. You then would need to know how to upload your files there too.

It looks like your website is maintained by a webdesigner. I could help but I would need to know how to access your website.

Thanks, Jay! I am going to email our website people and ask them to do it.

Is it possible to put our favicon on our AR site? I'm thinking probably not, but I'm just wondering!

Thanks again for your help!

I'm going to have to read this one several times before I get the hang of it.  It seems a little complicated for me, but I'm willing to give it a try, just so I can have something different than everyone else.
