Brooklyn New Yorkisms!

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster 0225078705
Even though I moved away from Brooklyn New York years ago in 1980... it is still my home!  I guess it is like the saying that "You can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the boy!"  Most of my life I've lived south of the Mason Dixon line!  I had many years in LaPlata Maryland, and Chantilly Virginia and then on to Alpharetta Georgia!  I still miss back home.  There was humor in conversation on every level when Brooklynites and New Yorkers are very direct and too the point, and nothing was ever left to the imagination!  Once in a while I meet other ex-patriots from Brooklyn and New York in the South and we have a great time  reminising about the old days!  Sometimes it is just in the phrases we used to use, and what the expression meant!  I thought I would share just a few of these with youse guys!  I hope you enjoy them!

  • Not for nothing but!
  • When hell freezes over!
  • No way in hell!
  • Exactly!
  • Don't make me come over there!
  • End of story!
  • Let's not go there!
  • Faggethabouddit! (Later 90's)
  • It is what it is!
  • In a New York Minute!
  • How ya doin?
  • Neither here nor there!
  • Who died and left you in charge?
  • Stop you're killing me!
  • You're yanking my chain!
  • It's your dime!
  • Are you tawkin to me?

It's so interesting to note where phrases come from. Some seem very familiar, yet others - My Strategic Execution Officer, Amy, frequently says "Not for nothing, but" and she grew up here in Florida. Guess my background as an English major has an issue with that one.

Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS   It is very interesting that you mentioned Florida!  Many times I meet folks from Florida that sound like they are from Brooklyn, their parents are.  Florida has a very large percentage of retired folks from the NYC area!

I think the Sopranos brought 'faggethabouddit' back again!  Also, I thought we Southerners came up with the 'in a hot New York minute' because we think New Yorkers are so much 'faster paced' than we are down here!!!  We're glad to have you here in the South Jim!

Leaving BrooklynDebe Maxwell Debe in Brooklyn when you came over the Veranzano Bridge coming into Brooklyn there was a sign that said "Now Entering Brooklyn - You Got A Problem with That?"  When you were leaving Brooklyn, the highway sign stated "Leaving Brooklyn - Fuhgeddaboudit!"

Hi Jim - somehow I just knew you were from New York!  I was born in Queens and now I live on Long Island.  Long Islanders seem not to be as direct and their language not as colorful as Brooklyn and the other boroughs.  So - I miss it sometimes.  I get very happy when I get a call from Queens or Brooklyn to do a home staging or design work.  I get to hear the "speak" that I grew up with!

Linda Leyble (Studio of Decorative Arts/Beautiful Staged Homes)  They are great people because they tell it like it is.  In the south we sometimes can sugar coat it too much!
