Two new sections or the Manhattan Kansas Dangerous Dog Ordinance were recently approved by the City Commission.  Several pprevious Sections were also changed and amended.  Here is a summary of Ordinance 6646

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash whenever they are not on their owners property
  • New tethering restrictions were adopted to address the safety of public and animal cruelty issues
  • The responsibility of ownership requirements for owners of dangerous dogs was increased
  • Fines for owners that allow aggressive dogs to run at large were adopted
  • A new process was instituted to expedite the procedure for a Municipal Judge to declare a dog dangerous.
  • Wolf and coyote hybrid dogs are no longer allowed in Manhattan City limits

The City of Manhattan does not have a breed specific ban on dogs other than Wolf and Coyote Hybrids. But, dogs that are of a certain size and breed that are 'capable of inflicting life threatening injuries' are held to a very high standard.  Some of these breeds are:

  • Amercian Pit Bull Terrier
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Argentine Dogo
  • Cane Corso
  • Chow
  • Dogue de Bordeaux
  • Doberman Pinscher
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • German Shepherd
  • Perro de Presa Canario
  • Rottweiler
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • Any dog, purebred or mix, that has the appearance and characteristics of any one of the breeds above

4 Comments on Manhattan Kansas Dogs and Dangerous Dog Ordinance

The California Legislature recently sneaked a law (it didn't hit the news until the day before voting) that required all dogs in the state to be neutered or spayed--unless you had certification from a vet that the dog was a purebred.  Fortunately they tabled it after a mass protest.

Jim, that sounds like a pretty strict law.  I am sure it wouldn't fly in this area either.

German Shepherd is on this list?  Don't the county police use these dogs?

The city of Manhattan has been talking about changing this one for a while especially after some of the recent things that happened involving pit bulls in the area.  I think the real problem is owner responsability and not so much the dog.
