Two new sections or the Manhattan Kansas Dangerous Dog Ordinance were recently approved by the City Commission. Several pprevious Sections were also changed and amended. Here is a summary of Ordinance 6646
- Dogs must be kept on a leash whenever they are not on their owners property
- New tethering restrictions were adopted to address the safety of public and animal cruelty issues
- The responsibility of ownership requirements for owners of dangerous dogs was increased
- Fines for owners that allow aggressive dogs to run at large were adopted
- A new process was instituted to expedite the procedure for a Municipal Judge to declare a dog dangerous.
- Wolf and coyote hybrid dogs are no longer allowed in Manhattan City limits
The City of Manhattan does not have a breed specific ban on dogs other than Wolf and Coyote Hybrids. But, dogs that are of a certain size and breed that are 'capable of inflicting life threatening injuries' are held to a very high standard. Some of these breeds are:
- Amercian Pit Bull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Argentine Dogo
- Cane Corso
- Chow
- Dogue de Bordeaux
- Doberman Pinscher
- Fila Brasileiro
- German Shepherd
- Perro de Presa Canario
- Rottweiler
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- Any dog, purebred or mix, that has the appearance and characteristics of any one of the breeds above
