Have You Heard About the Facebook Cop in Menlo Park

Have You Heard About the FaceBook Cop in Menlo Park

Facebook is moving their headquarters to Menlo Park, CA and so a few months ago they went to the Menlo Park Police Department and agreed to pay $194,000 for 3 years to pay for a police offer to handle 'At Risk Youths' and serve the local residents in this area.

Mary Ferguson, an 8 year Veteran on the force, will assist the local schools when youths fail to show up for long periods of time. When they locate the kids, they are taken back to school immediately. This is a 3 year contract to better the community and get their  kids back on track.

Facebook also donated funds to get the Menlo Park Sub-Station in the mall re-opened. It had closed due to budget cuts and the community sees it as a necessary station. Facebook will pay 75% of the rent and expenses for 3 years and Police Officer Mary Ferguson will work from this station. Reopening the station will help reduce crime and make better relations between the police and the community.

Menlo Park's Police Chief says that Facebook put up the handsome donation but he makes the rules. Most of the residents of the area are happy with this new relationship.

Outside Professionals see this as a bad situation. When private industries give large donations to pay for buildings and personal, who is really making the decisions? Plus will other private donors now be a trying to give money to law enforcement with the idea of getting a say. Should private corporations be allowed to donate funds to public entities like police departments.

Facebook does a lot of community outreach and gives to many charitable organizations such  as  'The Boys and Girls Club of America" but normally it is not  generally it does not get a lot of publicity.

What do you think? Do you see this as a positive situation for the community?

Kristin, I think all businesses should contribute back to the community for it's betterment. The caution is not to do it for buying control.

Thanks for a great thought provoking post.

I can easily see how some people would be against this....it's a great concept, but could end up being used for greed and power rather than actually helping the community.  In this case, I think it was a great thing for facebook to do and a brilliant business move.

Hi James,

I think it is a great union but other organizations might not be as wholesome as Facebook.

Hi Debbie,

Yes I think it is a good situation and FB has a interest in this area since their corporation is here now and the security of their building and employees are of concern.

Hi John,

I think the mello roos that they charge the new developers pays for a lot of this. I think if all companies put a percentage back to the cities besides the taxes and accessed fees. Unfortunately many companies just make a slim profit margin and couldn't afford any more taxes.

Hi Cindy,

I am so glad as many others saw this and it is a positive article involving FB. Sometimes the news tried to put negative things and rarely positive. I think the community will welcome FB with open arms.

Hi Gayle,

I was surprised it wasn't FEATURED but of course we should not care if it is or isn't but by featuring it more readers would have seen it. Thanks for the kind words. I think it is a positive move for Menlo Park and Facebook.

Kristin

I hadn't heard about the FB move to Menlo Park but overall I think this is a good thing, including their financial contributions to the community. As long as those contributions (frpom FB or any business for that matter) do not result in special priveleges or a great er say in the operation of those services I think it's fine, and a plus for the community and the services

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

That was the condition that they accept the money; community addition but no special privileges. The Police Chief says he makes the decisions.
