HERITAGE SQUARE IN GOLDEN, COLORADO
Originally built as Magic Mountain in 1957-59, Heritage Square in Golden, Colorado is a “Storybook Victorian” theme park shopping village in Golden, Colorado. Several Hollywood art directors who worked on Disneyland created the original design. It was the earliest known attempt to spread the theme park industry beyond Disneyland.
The theme park was originally set to be built on the northeastern alcove of South Table Mountain, just east of Golden but was met with sharp opposition from nearby residents of the Applewood area. Owners soon after complied with Applewood and went to the alternate location. Rolling Hills Country Club now sets on the original spot along with preserved scenic open space.
The design of Magic Mountain was based on Colorado history, development and future and was to be surrounded by an authentic narrow gauge train. It was also to include a ski slope. However, after being met with financial difficulties, plans were scaled back and even though the ski area was successful the theme park was not.
Magic Mountain collapsed in 1960 and was reopened as Heritage Square in 1971. It now features children’s rides, an alpine slide, Heritage Music Hall, Rio Golden train, and artisan shops. In 1988 the Opera House was reborn and remains one of the most popular dinner theatre establishments in Colorado.
There are open space parks in three directions around Heritage Square. To the west, Apex Park, to the east, William F. Hayden Park on Green Mountain, and to the south, Matthews/Winters Park with North Dinosaur Open Space Park. To the north, are some great townhome and condominium complexes and single family homes. The townhouses and condos are priced in the middle to upper $100,000. range while single family homes are around $400,000. If you go a bit further north and just to the east, you will find some higher end homes ranging all the way to $1,000,000. or more.
