The Marathon City Council meeting, held at the beginning of July, included some approvals for long awaited improvements for the city. The end result of the approved changes will bring new homes and services, as well as updated facilities to Marathon. Being one of the best areas of the Keys for fishing, boating and family fun, the new developments are sure to add to the attraction of Marathon for residents, visitors and newly arriving transplants to the area.

The biggest news of the approved changes is an oceanside housing development at mile marker 60. Two adjacent pieces of property, including the long closed Grassy Key restaurant, will be revamped for 14 new homes, six of which will be a few steps from the water’s edge and eight that will be oceanfront properties. There will also be a new marina with a public boat ramp built, with parking for 14-16 vehicles, and a gas station with convenience store. This property development will bring new life and community vitality to mile marker 60 in Marathon.

There are also plans to redevelop the Sombrero Country Club and Golf Course. Originally built in 1960, the clubhouse will be replaced with a new building and all other remaining facilities will be updated. There are also plans to market the golf club in hopes of attracting Ladies Pro Golf Association players, youth instructors and fundraising events. These updates and new approaches for the club will be a great addition to the community connection of the club.

Marathon is on its way to bring more community connection with these new developments and updates. If you are ready to connect with Key West with a home of your own, or have a home to sell in the area; please contact me, Jimmy Lane, for all of your real estate needs.
