YOU ARE THE OWNER BUT DO YOU LEAD THE TEAM?

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

What is the difference between high performing teams and dysfunctional teams?  In many cases it comes down to leadership.

If you lead any type of sales team in Westchester County, NY you know the importance of having a dependable team.  The fact that you are the owner or the boss will earn you lip service but it won't guarantee loyalty or high performance. You need to be recognized by Successful Team Leadership in Westchester NYyour team as their leader by earning it.  Expressed in different terms the owner has the authority but the leader has the power.

The leader’s power is earned through empathy for the team, clear direction, trust, and other factors. People are not born leaders. Leadership is developed and there is not one set of leadership traits. In fact there are examples of two very effective leaders with highly contradictory traits.

The leadership in the US Armed forces inspires and demands that each person does his or her very best. A military leader does not have to possess the traits and style of George S. Patton to be an effective commander. People with totally different traits such as Colin Powell or Norman Schwarzkopf were equally effective leaders.

A great leader understands what motivates people. If you wish to lead your team in your company, your agency or your office you should understand that as well. It is important to understand that today’s workforce does not react the same as Patton’s troops did. Fear and incentive motivation does work but it does not have lasting results. Today’s leadership is positive. So in order to be a great leader you must understand the motivation of your people as well as what motivates you. Keep these points in mind:

  1. Clearly explain your vision, your goals and objectives as well as those of your organization. A clear vision lets people know what to do.
  2. Convey a positive attitude. In order to empower your people to achieve results you must begin by developing positive attitudes toward yourself and your abilities.
  3. Be confident in your ability. Others on the team may have self-doubts but your ability to lead is connected to your confidence level. Your confidence will help others overcome their self-doubts and replace those doubts with positive beliefs.
  4. Be a good listener. Good communication is essential for building trust and understanding.       In order to understand other people the leader must listen much more than he or she talks.
  5. Lead by example.       If you tell your people that they must set goals, manage their time, and measure success you need to be doing that and it must be visible to your team.
  6. Give meaningful feedback. People are most productive and have the best attitudes when they receive a balance for both positive and negative feedback. Remember to catch people doing things right as well as when things are wrong.

Excellent post Grant!

One thing I struggle with is building a strong team. It is very hard to find the right people to fit our branch's culture in this ever-changing business environment. Being a strong leader and motivator is the most important thing to me and I appreciate your advice.

Debbie - OMG I wonder if  spell check did it.  Thanks

Joe -  people like managing themselves.

Loreena - we need to develop more leaders.  People get thrown into supervisory roles without leadership development.

Erin - the right culture and values is essential for team members.  Other things can be taught.

It's tough to lead a team of sales people. We are independent by nature, and that's what you want. Yet a leader needs to lead.

Leaders are trained but they must be trainable, however, the trainees must have traits or skills that can be enhanced in order to achieve the goals and objectives of being a leader. Good self esteem and being fearless are two traits that are essential IMO. Making plays consistently through performance and productivity are the results of training, yet, it's not necessary that a trainer be THE leader of the organization, he could just be a member but nevertheless a leader.

Ron - yes talking is one thing.  Doing is another.

Karen - it is more challenging but everyone will benefit from a good leader.

Endre - I know some of them. The customer can see it.

Sharon - thanks.  I am honored by that.

Kimo - I agree.  I think the point is that in order to be a team leader you have to lead yourself or as you say be trainable.  And correctly stated that you can show personal leadership and take the initiative to execute a great play as an individual performer and be an example to others.

Malendaz - they step up and assume the role.
