I remember my writings from last year. I was in a funk about business being slow. Several of the lenders, mortgage brokerages and escrow companies we had done considerable work with suddenly closed their doors forever. It seems that the shock of my new circumstance was difficult for me and I was trying to comprehend it all. I sometimes put a face on my true feelings by writing about them and then the truth becomes more visible to me. I'm happy to say that I have recovered from the shock and regained my normally upbeat and positive outlook. I realize that my business is "different" now, but I have adapted to the changes all around me.

I am also better for having had the experience. I've prepared for the next "up" cycle by laying the groundwork that will make my business run smoother and more efficiently when things pick up. I have broadened the number of services I offer and have managed to avoid selling myself short. I have softened my "hard" line and yet kept my ethics intact. I have made many new associations and focussed more effort upon learning from the experiences of others who are even more successful than I.

I think the suddenness of phone not ringing after the Countrywide meltdown last summer caught every notary off guard. I am in the Inland Empire and we are still struggling with new home sales and foreclosures.
I did a bunch of the subprime loans and when I saw the scores that borrowers had I was thinking "can they pay this loan every month?"
I had no idea that we were headed for this mess and the slow down.
I do more public notary work now. I think the refi business is increasing and I don't use myself as an example (because I stayed pretty busy, but was no longer referring business to other notaries) but 2 of my notary friends in Riverside are now getting more and more business every week.
I teach for www.notaryclasses.com and the number of people in CA wanting to be a notary is down 30%-40% and loan signer classes are also way down.
We will have less notaries in CA in 2008 than 2007. I think it is a great time to become a notary in CA because we already had one of the very lowest notary per capita ratio in the U.S. and as I said it will be a lot lower going forward.
