HOA Rules & Political Signs

It is not unusual in an election year to see political signs proudly posted in residential yards supporting their candidates or issues.     It is best to check with your HOA first before putting a political sign in your yard or any common area of your development.

Yard signs

An HOA has the right to restrict signs per the rules and regulations -

  • Unauthorized signed posted in common areas are subject to immediate removel without notice.
  • Take these removed signs and store for 30 days or disposal of sign.
  • The HOA may notify the sign owner and require the sign(s) to be removed before the HOA removes it.
  • The HOA may impose a fee as well as removal of the political sign in common areas.

If unsure of your own HOA rules, go back to the rules and regulations and read what requirements they have on signage.    They may have requirements on allowable signs, size limit, number of signs, and how long the sign can be posted.

HOA have these rules to keep the community clean and uncluttered and signs are viewed to look shabby and affects curb appeal.     It is best to read the rules before you start displaying your signs in the yard.

We just don't have the HOA's here to be impacted but this is good info for your Denver CO area, Joan.

Good morning Joan Cox.  Our HOA doesn't allow signs in the yards.  I'm actually glad.  With John being the HOA President we get a lot of late night calls and complaints but rules are rules.

This is a good reminder that political signs are not welcome in many locations.

Yes! This is a good idea for any types of signs. Unfortunately, in my area political signs seems to trump all the rules.

Joan, great reminder for those living in an HOA. Many signs are not allowed here as well. They really do impact curb appeal.

Also may be a good idea for buyers to understand the rules for future reference when they may choose to sell...

Joan: There is no quicker way to get on the bad side of those enforcing HOA rules than to violate this simple one. Check with your HOA before assuming or acting and you could save yourself a lot of grief.

I put a political sign up in my yard and the local hippie dinosaur from the 60s stopped by to tell me I was in violation of the HOA rules.  I told her I really didn't care.  The sign stayed up until the election!

Joan good information.  One of the HOA's around here will not even let Realtors put up For Sales signs in front of the units they are selling, not even for Open Houses.

Without question some HOA's are out of control and go over the top but they also keep many from living next to a purple or pink house and or have cars on blocks in the front yard too so not all bad as they do keep it fair for all and remember YOU agreed to the HOA BEFORE you bought!

Hi Joan, I think all the political signs are an eyesore. There are some homes here with ten or more signs in their yard...ridiculous.

Joan, it's that time again, primary season has begun in our area and the signs are beginning to pop up.  Residents definitely need to be aware of their own regulations and those who just put out signs willynilly may find that they are being removed by HOAs.

Joan, most don't even think of the HOA rules before they place these type of signs in their yard, great information for those who live in subdivisions with HOA.

As we get closer to election day, we shall be seeing many signs, and before you plant some in your yard, you may want to check with your HOA and see what the rules are for your community.

Yes, Joan. Many HOAs have strict rules about yard signs. It's advisable to check out the rules first. With elections coming, this is certainly sound advice.

Those signs are everywhere! It is crazy. Seems, no rules of regulations for them. But it is easy. Unlike realtor signs, they just have a name on them, no information who left them...
