Mysterious Document of Tomahawk Manor's Past

Tomahawk Manor, now located in Hartly, Delaware, outside of the State Capital of Dover, has a reputation and a mystery about it.  The story below has been handed down for many years and through 2 owners of the house.

Tomahawk story

The good news is that over 40 years ago, a local game warden found the house languishing in a field as described above. What did he do about it? He bought it from the owner, a farmer, and took it apart, brick by brick and moved it to 11 nearby acres of vacant land. It was re-assembled with whatever materials could be salvaged, plus materials from other old homes that were not so lucky as to find someone to save them.  Even better news is that the present owner has updated systems, bathrooms, and the kitchen. The interior and exterior have been painted, the barn apartment is spic and span, the grounds and pond have been meticulously groomed, and the home is ready for the next generation of owners.

Carolyn, this post is of special interest to me.  I have a friend who bought a very old log home in Wisconsin and he also took it apart log by log and moved it back into a valley about 1,000 yards away from where it originally stood onto his own property.  It was big news in town especially when he went about the task of rebuilding it.  The log home is on the National Register as being one of the oldest Federal style log homes east of the Mississippi.  I had the pleasure of helping him rebuild it and of course got to spend a few nights there.

Nick--What a great story!  We don't have a lot of log homes here and many of them are hidden under later additions and don't come to light until someone is doing renovations or starting to tear the house down. They are usually built in the Swedish style because of the early settlers in the Delaware valley.
