Do Not Leave a Paperwork Mess for your Loved Ones after you Die

Intestate: A person who dies withouth making a valid will.
I know it is not a fun subject, but it is a part of life. One of the greatest gifts you can give a loved one is to have your paperwork in order so your family knows your wishes after you die. Does a trusted family member or friend know where to find your will? Or where to look for your trust?

Not everyone will die of old age. Sometimes sickness, accidents or natual disasters come along unexpecetedly and change lives. We hear these stories every day but we never think it will happen to us.

Ask your Realtor, Financial Planner, or Accountant for a reference to an attorney and get the process started. Tell yourself this Monday you will ask for a referrence, the next Monday you will call, and work on protecting and preserving your assets each Monday until you get it done. Put it on your calendar. Make it an appointment with yourself like you would going to the dentist, or seeing the doctor.

On a weekly basis so many people check thier bank accounts, I.R.A.'s, stocks, their home value, and care so much about their finanical planning, they sometimes put planning the biggest event in their financial life on the back burner. Do not let your hard earned money end up spent on taxes and vendor services that could have been avoided had you planned right. Not to mention the papeerwork mess you would leave behind for those that you love.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

Very important message...keep it tidy in the file drawers, and let someone know the "key".

Thank you for stopping by Li. Agreed a file drawer is a great place for someone to find what they need once drafted.

Important message to share, Elisa. I think having a Living Trust properly set up, discussed with adult children, and a copy made available to the successor trustee is one of the best gifts one can give the next generation.

This is important information.  Wills and trusts help not only with the disposition of your property, but also your kids, pets, and other things you hold dear.

I had my paperwork in order when I was 25.  I update every few years.

Chris, yes! Many people do not realize they can leave instructions regarding pets.

William, impressive! Not to many people can make this claim. Good for you!

We both have these documents in our files, and the copies of the Living Will and Health Care Directives are also with our physicians.  The executor also has copies of everything.  Very important post.  Thank you!
