Winnetka & Illinois - How Flat are You?

By
Real Estate Agent with @Properties

UPDATED 2019

I moved to Chicago's North Shore in 1986 - I believe I have now lived here longer than I did in California. But there is one thing that I have longed for all these years.

I know you're thinking it's warm weather that I miss (I do.)

Perhaps it's the vast expanse of sandy beaches (Indeed.)

The horrendous traffic (nope, got plenty here!)

What I miss most is the topography - the mountains, the hills, the valleys.  As a runner, I had to adjust to running over and down or drive miles to find a flat place (the area around the Pasadena Rose Bowl is perfect for that.)

I just discovered the Illinois's highest point is . . . Charles Mound at 1,235 feet.  Compared to California's Charles Mound ILMt. Whitney at 14,494 feet, poor little Charles Mound can easily be missed as it's tucked away in the northwest corner of the state.

The former Sears Tower, now called Willis Tower, is higher than that!

I suppose if you stood on top of it, you could see all the way to Kentucky.

We live just north of the "fall line" in Georgia where the state gets as flat as Florida.  I would guess the top elevation in my county is 600 feet or so, but the lake is at 340 so we have some nice hills.

Hi Tammy -  I know that Georgia has some nice hills because I visit friends at Lake Burton every summer.  We hike in the mountains and along the Appalachian Trail- so beautiful there.

Margaret:  We own a home in Galena .. NW, IL.  We remark about how rolling it is compared to the Chicago-area each time we head out there.  You feel like you're in a different world because of it.  That said, I married a farmgirl.  She thinks nothing is more beautiful than flatland covered with fields of corn and beans.  Go figure ...

Gene - I've only been to Galena once but I do remember rolling hills.  Fields of corn or mountains - you love what you know and remember.

Margaret, there are pros and cons for everything.  With flat land and vistas you often have wide I obstructed views!
