One upon a time in my little world I wanted to go to hair school. As soon as I finished my bachelors I had planned to jump right into cutting hair and making people pretty. I researched a number of schools in Baton Rouge. I also joined a few hair forums on-line that kept me up to date on things and also answered a lot of my questions concerning school and well, hair. Well, I decided against hair school and fell into real estate, which I love. I thought I would share some info about Baton Rouge Cosmetology Schools. Picking a school is a big decision. You have to make sure you find one that fits your needs and one that is right for you.

Aveda Institute- This is the Big Kahuna of hair schools. Everyone knows about Aveda. If you know anything about Aveda, you know that it's really expensive. It's located off of Sherwood Forest. I went an interviewed with Aveda. While they seemed to be extremely nice, I don't think this would have been the right school for me. At Aveda, they go pass the point of teaching you to do hair. They dive into massages, nails and facials. I really didn't think I needed all of this. I learned from several others is that all you need is the basics. It's kind of like real estate school. At real estate school, all you really learn is to pass a test. You actually will learn everything when you start working out on the floor.

Aveda has a very strict policy as far as being late or absent. They don't play. If you are late to class, most of the time they will make you turn around and go back home. You are only allowed so many days to miss. Once you have missed the maximum limit, you are kicked out. I know a few people that got kicked out and still had to pay. They lost a lot of money. Also, Aveda is very particular about pushing their products.

You have to be up for an extreme challenge to go to Aveda. You must be responsible and prompt. I chose against Aveda because of their policies. I have a little boy and sometimes he gets sick, as all children do. I was afraid that that might cause me to miss more than the given amount. It was a risk that I wasn't willing to take. I do think that Aveda is by far the best when it comes to education. You will be learning from the best and they do take the time to prepare you for the real world.

Denham Springs Beauty College- It's obvious that this school is located in Denham. I did not go in for an interview but I did talk to the teacher on the phone. I also discussed this school with a current student. This beauty school isn't as upscale as Aveda. Like I said, all you need are the basics and that is what you will get at this school. They aren't as strict about being absent. All though you do have to clock in and out when you are at school. You must have a certain number of hours to take your test. If you are absent all this will do is prolong your graduation. The good thing about this beauty school is that it's thousands cheaper. I want to say it was about $8000, if that. Another thing is that there were several single mothers that went there and that were pleased. I have been going to an upscale salon for eight years to get my hair done. When I asked my stylist where she went to school she told me Denham Springs Beauty School.  It's what you do with the information they give you. You really have to be a self-start and a go get'r.

Camelot College- I called to make an interview at Camelot College but I ended up not going. I just didn't feel as if it were the right school for me. Plus, I think it was a little too far from my house. Camelot College is basically a technical school. It's not just a cosmetology school. They offer several different programs there. The program at Camelot College last for ten months. I think that Aveda is over a year. So, this seems to be a quickie course. The neat thing about Camelot College is that they have a daycare and a fitness center. I might be wrong but I think they also have living facilities. I'm not sure the price of this school but it might be a little cheaper than both Aveda and Denham.

D-Jay's School of Beauty- I really can't tell you anything about D-Jay's School of Beauty. I never made an attempt to call because I had never really heard anything about it. It is located off of Government. I am sure they offer the same basic skills but not as much as Aveda. If you are looking for something a little cheaper, this might be a good option.

Paul Mitchell Hair School- My three top choices were this school, Aveda and Denham. I had trouble getting in contact with the director of this program. It probably took a few weeks for me to finally reach her. This is only because they were new and I'm sure were trying to get everything in it's place. This school is located in Bluebonnet Parc by the Mall of Louisiana. I really wanted to go to this school. I did go and visit when I couldn't get in touch with the director. Everyone seemed to be having a fun time and they were really nice. I can't remember if the Paul Mitchell was cheaper than Aveda. I don't think it was. For some reason, I want to say that it was $18,000 but I could be totally wrong. I was going to choose this school over Aveda even though it was more expensive. I talked with someone about being absent or late and they seemed to be more understanding than Aveda. Plus, I just love Paul Mitchell products.
